Rank these 3: Erik Morales, Wilfred Benitez and Wilfredo Gomez

I struggled with this question, Gomez or Benitez? I guess I deem Gomez the more compete fighter, so I would also say:

Gomez
Benitez
Morales

But I don't have a mjor problem wiht Benitez at 1, since he was more successful at higher weights.

 

I'm not giving weight to the 'Pacquiao was not the same fighter when Morales beat him' notion. He's improved somewhat but its totally blown out of proportion imo. Everybody on here has been talking about how Pac is top 20 or 10 even, and Morales has a win over him when past his own best weight(s). Morales is bona fide great for me, Gomez looks a better fighter but Morales had a greater careera and has the better resume.

Morales is criminally underrated on here, especially on ability. People act like he'd be ineffective against top tier competition, and i think that's laughable.

 

Good points, Morales was also in a 122lb golden era pretty much. Lets change this into a Gomez v Morales thread, 122, 126, 130, who you got?

 

I would probably end up taking Gomez, i just don't like how people nanchalantly claim that Gomez stops Morales. Wow. You can talk all day about how complete and great Gomez was, but you have to respect the fact that prime Erik Morales is not just turning up and staying quiet for anyone. No chance in hell.

 

In fairness Gomez is a better puncher than anyone Morales faced and his knockout run was amazing. Its a match up I'm split on. Morales has some Sanchezesque qualities of his own, Gomez has a left hooker better than MABs and slides in and out just as well with beautiful Rican footwork and head movement

 

even roberto durán was talking on hispanics boxers and he said that benitez was greater than gómez....

Id favor Gomez over Erik at 122...By UD, i dont think he knocks him out.

At 126, and 130 i would have to favor Morales, since IMO Morales looked at his best at 126, and Gomez wasnt really the same above 122.

 

Agreed. Gomez was a master at 122, but not the same fighter above that.
