I'd address the thread question but I run the risk of upsetting Anarci. A Mexican would not top the list.

There is only one "o" in Napoles's name, no matter how many times you decide to spell it differently for whatever reason.

These guys are very tightly bunched for me and I wouldn't have a lot of argument with any order. I have:

    Hagler
    Napoles
    Ortiz
    Olivares

It could be argued that Olivares was as good or better at his weight than any of them, but with such quality resumes, I have to seperate somehow, and Ruben took his share of losses at the end. I always admired Hagler for just saying "**** it" after the Leonard fight. I would not have wanted to see the likes of a Michael Nunn beating him.

    Napoles
    Olivares
    Ortiz
    Hagler

Ortiz & Olivares are just about interchangable. I think there's a clear gap between Napoles and Hagler; Napoles faced and beat better opposition (honestly, anyone questioning this should take another look). Not to say that Hagler couldn't, it's just that he didn't. If you're rating on head-to-head ability, you really could mix them up in any order, although I think I'd still have a lightweight Napoles just ahead.

    Hagler
    Napoles
    Ortiz
    Olivares

I don't see how you can have Hagler fourth really.. his wins over Antufermo, Hearns, Duran, Sibson and Minter match up well with the other guys resumes and while Olivares' may have been the best of the lot at his very best but his inconsistency is a definate shortcoming for me.

    Seriously?

Let's compare their wins over rated opponents:

    Marvin Hagler

    Sugar Ray Seales
    Eugene Hart
    Willie Monroe (x2)
    Mike Colbert
    Kevin Finnegan (x2)
    Bobby Watts
    Bennie Briscoe
    Loucif Hamani
    Marcos Geraldo
    Alan Minter
    Fulgencio Obelmejias (x2)
    Vito Antuofermo
    Mustafa Hamsho (x2)
    Tony Sibson
    Wilford Scypion
    Juan Roldan
    John Mugabi

    Roberto Duran
    Thomas Hearns

    --

    Jose Napoles

    Angel Robinson Garcia
    Bunny Grant
    Tony Perez (x2)
    Baby Vasquez (x2)
    LC Morgan (x3)
    Alfredo Urbina (x2)
    Carlos Hernandez
    Adolph Pruitt (x2)
    Eugenio Espinoza
    Herbie Lee
    Leroy Roberts
    Eddie Pace
    Ernie Lopez (x2)
    Edwin Mack
    Manuel Gonzalez
    Billy Backus
    Jean Josselin
    Hedgemon Lewis (x2)
    Ralph Charles
    Roger Menetrey
    Clyde Gray
    Horacio Saldano
    Armando Muniz (x2)

    Eddie Perkins
    Curtis Cokes (x2)
    Emile Griffith

    --

I'd say Napoles' era was marginally stronger, but he beat more contenders in his career so naturally he'll be rated higher. He also gets extra points for being a small welterweight (really just a lightweight), regaining his respect after the Muniz farce and avenging his fluke title loss at the hands of Backus.
