Gotta revisit this once Canelo has hung them up. for now it’s 1.Erik Morales 2.JMM 3. MAB 4. Canelo for my personal taste ... for now.
Just to put things in perspective this thread would have been laughed out of this board a mere couple of years ago.
I love morales and barrera but both rank behind canelo and jmm imo I'm putting Marquez first. He did pretty much beat Pacquiao 4 times
Canelo still has a lot he is at his peak prime by the time he is done like it or not he will be up there wouldn't be surprised if he goes on top of Marquez Morales and Barrera
Interesting how Marquez's late career ranks him now Morales and Barrera as he was viewed as lesser to some extent during most of it.
He just had a very different career trajectory compared to his peers, achieving more later in his career much like Lennox Lewis and Bernard Hopkins, both of them were on nobodies future ATG lists in the mid 90's but look at them now standing above their peers who out shone them back them. JMM is partly to blame for his lack for recognition early. He or in truth Berestein made some bad career choices. He should of taken the low ball offer to fight Hamed then it would of been him upsetting Hamed instead of Barrera. He should of rematched Pac sooner instead of holding out for more money. He should of taken the $1.5 mill Arum offered to fight Morales in 05, while I get he didn't want to be tied into another contract with Arum it took him 2 more years to secure a meaningful fight vs Barrera, he could of easily fought Morales and fought for Arum for another 2 years and then been free and either then go for Barrera under Golden Boy or secure the Pac rematch to resign with Arum. Thing that surprised me was how well he held up later in his career. It's not like he didn't have wars like the ones vs Pac as well as the first Juan Diaz fight. He wasn't a slick defensive fighter, JMM took a lot of hard punches over his career but still was able to compete at an advanced age vs naturally bigger opponents. While Barrera and Morales were done by 2010 he was still competing at top level despite being older than Morales and Barrera.
Canelo has no rivals like Barrera, Morales or Marquez. Not his fault but there's a deeper problem. He doesn't have a clear win over his best opponent who happened to be 35/36 and (likely) past his physical prime. Had the option to face him earlier. Declined. That is his fault. And so, like Floyd with Manny, he will pay a similar penalty. But then Floyd doesn't get enough credit for the Castillo rematch. There was no Lara rematch. Danny Jacobs is probably Canelo's best win because he was proven and it was clear. Smith & Saunders' credentials were questionable going in, and all the other cats at 168 are an uninspiring bunch. I can't be the only one who senses they want that payday more than victory. We may be in something of a honeymoon phase, hit with chants of "P4P King" at every turn, charmed by extravagant ring walks, but there is no way Canelo has hit the heights of his countrymen.
Canelos best win over a prime opponent is Daniel Jacobs. Morales best win over a prime opponent is Manny Pacquiao. /thread.
