Not an easy task. Holmes - Could be used for offense, defense, or piling on points. Thrown often. A real head snapper. Wlad - Best combination of speed, reach, accuracy, and power. Thrown often from behind great height. Can win a fight all by itself. Liston - Had the hardest jab of the bunch. Great range too. Not much speed. Ali - Was not always a big factor in his fights. Ali could be out jabbed, which is one reason why he does not rate as high as some might initially think. Lewis - When it was going, it was great. Not used enough, otherwise it would rate higher. Foreman - Like Liston, Foreman's jab was a power punch. The jab was better for Foreman in the 90's than 70's. Louis - Used to set up his combinations, but Louis jab was not enough to win rounds consistently when he was the bigger fighter vs the best boxers Louis meet. Johnson - Could score quickly with the jab, but didn't use it vs live bodies his size to win. For pure jabs, Bruce Seldon, Carl Williams, Vitlai Klitschko, Gene Tunney, Ken Norton, Mike Morrer, and a few others could rate as well.
Foreman a better jab than Lewis and Wlad? Number of times that Foreman outjabbed a world class opponent...... 0 Number of times Foreman took a rest behind the jab against Ali.... 0 Number of times Foreman was competitive in jabbing with Young... 0 Number of times Foreman took a fight thanks to his jab.... 0 Number of times Foreman lost his biggest fight because he never used his jab... 1
Lewis,s jab was underused and often pawing Foreman 's was hard ,nothing about Wlad impresses me except his physique.I left out Johnson ,put him in the middle.Louis ,s jab was described as a s hard as the average heavyweights right,Listons was heavy and accurate ,but slow and sometimes counter productive, as it pushed his opponent back out of range of his hook. Holmes for me has had the best jab out of the modern heavy champs.
