Movie film of Johnson run in slow motion would be necessary to detect how he could deliver a half dozen accurate jabs in rapid succession, but it did not overshadow his defense and ring generalship.

Bill, I'll let your list stand for myself as well.

The most hurtful jab I saw Ali display was in the Quarry rematch. He was also rather aggressive to the body with it against Blue Lewis.

Holmes is a cinch at number one. It got him through a career of over three decades and a quarter century at the world class level. It has to be the most evolved jab in history, based on longevity of use alone.

Dr. Z I think Vitali's jab is too much of a paw. Gene Tunneys jab was did not appear elegant, sharp, or fluid, like say a walcott's jab.

Walcott should get mention here. That triple jab(two fakes to the body, last one to the head) he did to louis all night was a thing of beauty

Vitali's jab wasn't great in a technical sense, but it was good enough for him to out jab Lennox Lewis, and Chris Byrd...and everyone else he fought. Vitali fired his jab a lot, the jab had good range and power in it, tended to mark guys up, and decent speed.

I think he is an honorable mention. I do think Walcott had a good jab, but he did not use it enough.

    1. Liston - Power and timing were second to none. You don't need speed if you have timing, Liston proved that point emphatically throughout his career.

    2. W.Klitschko - I'm one of his biggest detractors but credit where it's due, he can really kill off a fight with this punch. Quick, sharp, consistent and powerful jab that can dictate a fight. If you stand infront of him and you can't counter off the left hand (which most current heavies can't) then you're as good as beaten.

    3. M.Ali - The fastest jab and the most difficult to avoid as it's fired from a strange angle. He too could win fights with the jab.

    4. Larry Holmes - I can barely believe I find myself ranking him in 4th place because he has a fantastic jab, but I still feels he ranks just behind the aforementioned three.

    5. L.Lewis - Used the jab very well on most occassions, but not timed well enough to keep the plodding come-forward Mercer off of him, and found himself outboxed by Vitali also. It was sharp, fast and powerful, but he wasn't quite as noteworthy with it as some.

    6. Louis - Great jab, perhaps overshadowed by the rest of his incredible punching arsenal though. I wouldn't object to Louis interchanging with Lewis on this list.

    7. Johnson - Not really a pure boxer, more in the Mayweather mould of laying back and leading with counter rights, but he could box conventionally if it was neccessary as with some of his slicker opponents.

    8. Foreman - Don't think there is anything standout about his jab, but what came after it was impressive.

    6) Foreman (powerfull
    7) Lewis (strong jab but for setting up the Right hand bomb

Not only that, but when he did his shifting, he was jabbing with his right as well, the shuffle generating more force behind it. Good shout out.

Holmes had the greatest jab ever bar none.It was such a great weapon it allowed Holmes to fight YEARS beyond his prime.
What was Holmes like 53 years old when he fought Butterbean? And yes I know Butterbean isn't that good but watch Holmes whip that jab into Butterbean's face.Even in his fifties his jab was STILL a weapon to contend with.

Holmes was such a great fighter.
Out of prime he was beating younger/stronger opponents.
you don't see that many often these days.
