For their H2H level at the specific time:

    1) Evander Holyfield against Lewis 2
    2) Muhammad Ali vs Spinks 2 (age: 36)
    3) Lennox Lewis vs Vitali
    4) Joe Louis vs Marciano
    5) Wladimir Klitschko vs Povetkin
    6) George Foreman vs Cooper (age: 40)
    7) Mike Tyson vs Etiene (age: 36)
    8) Larry Holmes vs Tyson (age: 38)

Who of them do you think was shot and who was a serious challange?

I think Lewis & Holyfield COULD swap places although personally I wouldn’t. Holmes & Foreman is tricky as well, but given the 2 years out, that specific version should probably rank below Foreman

I also thought about Lewis vs Holyfield, but other than that I can't argue with this order. We don't know how good Holmes was during Tyson fight, but given how well he looked later in the 1990s I have to pick him over Louis.

Evander got bossed by the jab all night long. He got some good shots if I suppose

I suppose I don't really like 'who had the best loss' questions.

How about Foreman then? He still won fights against decent opponents at this point.

I think the worst ,ranked from top to bottom is:
    Ali
    Louis
Holmes, though he fought better later
    Tyson
    Evander
    Wladimir
    Foreman
    Lennox
Ali has to be the worst, then Louis. They couldn't bust a paper bag at the end.

Louis was more than that. He could still beat lesser contenders at this point, Marciano was just way too much.

My placings for these particular fights:

    Klitschko
    Holyfield
    Lewis
    Foreman
    Tyson
    Holmes
    Ali
    Louis

Klitschko still looked as strong as ever vs Povetkin in 2013. His holding and grabbing style was not pleasing to the eye, but Wlad was being Wlad, he scored multiple knockdowns and he won easily.

I thought Evander at 37 in the Lewis 2 rematch gave a good showing, better than Lennox at 37 against Vitali imo so that's why Holyfield is ahead of Lewis for me.

George was moderately to reasonably impressive against Cooper.

Tyson was coming to the end.

Holmes rebounded from his Tyson showing to challenge again in the 90's .He was at a low ebb perhaps in '88 but not shot.

Spinks 2 in the rematch was Ali's last win and last hurrah. A reasonable performance.

Joe had been on a run of wins, but it wasn't the same Louis and Marciano showed Joe his championship days were over. It was Joe's last match.

I see Ali being ahead of Tyson at this point in their career. Muhammad was still beating top fighters, over the hill as he was.

    1. Wlad 2013
    2. Lewis 2003
    3. Foreman 1990
    4. Holmes 1988 *
    5. Holyfield 1999
    6. Ali 1978
    7. Louis 1951
    8. Tyson 2003

    * It's hard to rate 1988 Holmes, since he didn't fight at all in the 21 months leading to the Tyson fight, and he didn't fight again for over 3 years. On the one hand we know he was well past his best already in 1985/'86, on the other hand he was still reasonably capable in 1992 and comparable to Foreman.
