i give fighters credit for questionable defeats and deduct kudos for questionable wins. however questionable the of duran-buchanan,hands of stone loses no marks as he had already established. tito gets no credit for the way he aimlessly stalked (an admittedly brilliant oscar )and de la hoya gets no credit for sturm. if a fight can conceivably be scored the way it was officially scored then i don't 'overturn' it to fit my list. that's part of my criteria anyway :good

I think it should but to each their own.

Not nearly as deep as the welterweight division of the 90's and if you disagree with that I'd like to here the (rational) argument for it.

Evander looked so ordinary in the first Lewis fight it's not funny. Hence that fight being a whitewash for Lewis. He did look better in the rematch, but still, for me Whitaker still looked better against DLH than Evander did.

Evander still being in the picture at this stage I'm sure tells us more about the pathetic state of the heavyweight division than anythis else. No one in their right mind would think Holyfield would be anything but fodder in an average let alone excellent heavyweight division.

I don't see the rationale in leaving the Whitaker fight off the list. He is AT LEAST, by any criteria, as good as anyone Lewis ever beat. Heck, for what its worth I think even Vargas is about as good as anyone Lewis beat.

Of course, my biggest argument for throwing that 1-5 out the window though is that I think he did beat Mosley and Tito and when you factor in the way he lost, he looks way more favourable. You refuse to do that, and so be it.

That reason being that they thought he lost, not that Whitaker was no longer formidable. People that think he was no longer formidable aren't being honest with themselves.

Look, Lennox was undoubtedly more dominant, but the fact is that he wasn't facing the gun opponents that Oscar was. There's no fighter on Lennox's resume that I think Oscar would have trouble with assuming DLH was a natural heavyweight. He didn't lose to Rahman/McCall level fighters unless they were way outside his best weight (e.g. Sturm). You can't tell me Lennox would be as dominant as he was if he was a natural welter facing the type of guys Oscar did though. No frikken way. For starters, I think Tito would have sent him home his jaw by express post.

    Noted.

I`ll try not to leave Pacquiao out of my Hearns discussions from now on.

Nah, seriously, he popped into my head but I kept thinking 5 weights for some reason, I agree the FWT win over Barrera & ring belt should qualify him... it qualified Calzaghe vs Hopkins at 175 so it should Pacquiao also.

Just read thru the thread, some good points, I`ll chip in....

I agree with Dinamita & sweet_scientist regarding the DLH/Lewis thing, I understand some of selfkills points but Oscar DID beat Tito & Mosely (2nd fight) in my eyes, Ive never scored the DLH-Pea fight but a draw or a point either way is fair, no bad decision, Quartey was also a similarly close fight so again, no bad decision either way, he lost clearly to Sturm in his 6th weight class & Mosely beat him 7-5 in their primes but avenged or not, Rahman & McCall still happened.
The Pacquiao fight is deservedly a black mark on DLHs resume, he should never have allowed that but its still not enough to undo all the work that keeps him ahead of Lennox IMO.

Also... I like Arguello a lot but the more I think about it, Hearns was the better boxer, he faced better fighters & didnt have any slip ups early in his career or in non-title fights in his prime.

Some of Tommy Hearns performances leave you with nothing to say other than this guy is a master boxer, I dont see anyone from 160 downward being able to outbox this guy, sure, his physique helped but what about the beautiful technique, his speed, combinations, footwork, all that **** was thru sheer hard work & his big lanky frame would actually have been a hinderance a lot of the time.
Hearns only lost to Hagler & Leonard while at his best & his chin was the only reason, he would have whipped Marvin & Ray`s ass if he was blessed with a granite chin.

Hearns dominated Benitez, Duran & Cuevas, he KOd guys all the way to 190 lbs, regardless of those cruiserweights calibre, Tommy was WAY past his best himself & should have been retired by then.
Ive kinda overlooked the guy myself in the past when discussing the true ATGs but not anymore.

Hearns was a top 20 fighter of all time IMO, a true warrior who always fought the best & won more often than not, a true champion with dynamite in his hands & beautiful boxing technique.

The man is terribly underrated & I for one will underrate him no longer.

    Hearns = True legend.

I've got to be honest i think Lewis is far better than Oscar in terms of effectiveness and simply how good they are, to the point where it outweighs his status.

The ONLY thing people can use to have Oscar over Lennox is this going through the weights aspect of greateness. But Lennox Lewis was a dominant champion and regardless of some fighters he fought being past their primes, has a very good resume.

    Arguello
    Hearns
    Lewis

    Oscar.

By the way i don't even mind how the top three figure. Lewis is likely the best, or if he isn't there's hardly anything in it.

If you know me you know i really really dislike Lennox Lewis, but this is how i feel.

Sweet scientist i don't care if u rank de la hoya above lennox, history will have lennox as the better fighter. Not to mention that Lennox did beat vitali klitschko, and no i dont care if lewis was losing the fight, he disfigured klitschkos face and would have messed him up if the fight would have continued. Yes, I rank Vitali above guys like Ike Quartey and Fernando Vargas without hesistation. Even David Tua would most likely ko vargas and quartey in p4p matchups. Little guys get overrated and heavyweights get underrated by the 'expert' boxing fans.

If Lennox Lewis was fighting a guy 3-5 weight classes below him, he would never get embarassed and quit on his stool, even if he's 45. Which middleweight-light heavyweight fighter from this era would ever beat up Lennox the way pac just destroyed oscar. Roy Jones? Hopkins? Pavlik? LOL i dont think so, his loss to pac was embarassing.

You judge by the official record, people like Sweet_Scientist and I do not. For some bizarre reason you go along with the opinions of men in suits that you know are incorrect, people like SS and I choose to watch the fights and make our own decisions. Therefore you are correct, we will never agree :good

 Bill, why is it everyone you like is "terribly underrated"?

Hearns is not a top 20 fighter of all-time. I understand that he is maybe in your top 20 considering the last top 10 I ever saw you post had both Chavez and Mayweather in it, but Tommy (whilst undeniably an ATG, one of the best weight-jumpers in history and an all-round magnificent welterweight) just isn't a top 20 ATG. Top 30 maybe, top 35 definitely. I'd be very interested to see a top 20 with him in it, as I genuinely don't think that claim can be justified. Especially, I don't understand the claim that he'd have "whipped Marvin's ass" if he had an iron chin. At middleweight, Hagler defeats Hearns no matter what. I give Arguello the edge p4p as well.

De La Hoya was weight-drained and well past-prime when he fought Pac. Pac outweighed him on the night of the fight. Pac is the p4p#1.

Had that defeat occurred when Oscar was prime, or near-prime, and at a weight he was comfortable at then you would have cause to criticize him. But you don't now.

That loss was nowhere near as bad as either McCall or Rahman.

David Tua was better than Ike Quartey?? Sober up.

I rank Lewis and Oscar very closely, but I think Oscar's resume and achievements are a bit better. Great performances at lightweight and lightmiddleweight - that's pretty rare and special. I scored the Trinidad fight and the second Mosley fight for Oscar - that's two wins that are much, much better than anything on Lennox's res. I am more of a Lewis fan than an Oscar fan, but I don't understand how anyone can have a huge void between them.

Ike Quartey is nothing special, overrated fighter. Mccall or rahman were fluke kos, pac whooped him from round 1 through the entire fight.

It could be argued that the Mccall stoppage was premature anyways, many refs would have allowed him to continue.

If Lennox Lewis really wanted to, he could have easily picked on the smaller guys from his era like Hopkins, Toney and Roy and dismantle them, just like Oscar was beating up on midgets from 1993-1996. It's not Lennox Lewis's fault that Riddick Bowe blantantly dodged him and Tyson refused to fight him in 1996.

    What?

This guy arguably beat a prime De la Hoya..Came within a whisker of beating a pre-Tito Vargas IMO.

Annihilated Vince Phillips before he beat Tszyu..Beat Oba Carr, one of the better welterweight contenders never to win a world title.

And you best believe Ike has his way with ANY of todays welter crop :deal
