Hey guys. I have been browsing the forum for awhile now. Out of all the forums I have visited it seems like you are the most knowledgeable bunch around. Anyways, I'm working on special boxing project with a relative of mine that lives in L.A. Can't say what it is. I just want to get more opinions/views. Welterweights in their Prime My current list looks like this: 1) Thomas Hearns 2) Felix Trinindad 3) Pipino Cuevas 4) Sugar Ray Robinson 5) Sugar Ray Leonard 6) Henry Armstrong 7) Roberto Duran 8) Shane Mosley 9) Julio Cesar Chavez 10) Oscar Dela Hoya
Welcome to the forum. Are you asking specifically those 10 fighters or just the top 10 Welterweight hitters of all time? If it's the latter, I'd bump a few names off there, and definitely throw in guys like Barbados Joe Walcott & Charley Burley. If not, just to rank those 10 in order of pure power, I'd go: 1. Thomas Hearns 2. Pipino Cuevas 3. Ray Robinson 4. Felix Trinidad 5. Ray Leonard 6. Shane Mosley 7. Roberto Duran 8. Oscar De La Hoya 9. Henry Armstrong 10. Julio Cesar Chavez
I think that's pretty good. I'd have Duran below Mosley though, maybe Leonard and Armstrong should be switched.
@: the cobra I was asking specifically about these 10 fighters. That said, who would you bump off the list if you were to insert Walcott and Burley?
Namely Chavez and probably Armstrong as well, neither of whom were natural Welterweights. The more he moved up in weight, the more Hank was a wear-you-down kind of puncher I think. Still probably on par with the likes of Duran and DLH though.
Here is a list of guys Armstrong stopped in the first half of welterweight title fights: Phil Furr (4) Lew Jenkins (6) Paul Junior (3) Ralph Zanelli (5) Paul Junior (7) Joe Ghnourly (5) Jimmy Garrison (7) Bobby Pacho (4) Richie Fontane (3) Howard Scott (2) Al Manfredo (3) And here's a list of guys that managed to make it to the final bell in welterweight title fights: Barney Ross Ceferino Garcia Arizmendi (10) Ernie Roderick Jimmy Garrison (10) Fritzie Zivic '39-'40 he stopped nine challengers in a row. He was an absolute beast of a puncher as a welterweight, he wiped loads of guys out.
Jenkins, Arizmendi, Fontaine, Ghnouly, Junior, Garrison, Scott, etc, were all smaller guys around Armstrong's own size, more natural Lightweights than Welterweights, and at least a few were in the final stages of their careers. I'm not denying his power. I'm saying it's more on par with the likes of Duran and DLH (both of whom I'd expect to stop most of the same guys as Armstrong) than it is with Walcott or Burley, which means he'd be one of the few susceptible to getting bumped off to make room if the list took them into account.
@: everyone who posted. Many Thanks! You guys are helping us create an accurate fighter database. I hope you don't mind critquing my other lists. I've watched tons of fights and film but there is always a chance I could have missed something. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Heayweights 1) George Foreman 2) Earnie Shavers 3) Sonny Liston 4) Mike Tyson 5) Wlad K. 6) Lennox Lewis 7) Joe Louis 8) Jack Dempsey 9) Rocky Marciano 10) Razor Ruddock Light Heavyweights 1) Bob Foster 2) Sam Langford 3) Michael Spinks 4) Archie Moore 5) Roy Jones Jr. 6) Bob Fitzsimmons 7) Matthew Saad Muhammad 8) Ezzard Charles 9) Tiger Jack Fox 10) ? Middleweights 1) Julian Jackson 2) Gerald McClellan 3) Thomas Hearns 4) Nigel Benn 5) Roy Jones Jr. 6) Ray Robinson 7) Archie Moore 8) Mike McCallum 9) Marvin Hagler 10) Rocky Graziano Lightweights 1) Edwin Rosario 2) Alexis Arguello 3) Ike Williams 4) Roberto Duran 5) Joe Gans 6) Henry Armstrong 7) Kostya Tszyu 8) Shane Mosley 9) Edwin Valero 10) Oscar Dela Hoya Featherweights 1) Naseem Hamed 2) Wilfredo Gomez 3) Alexis Arguello 4) Danny Lopez 5) Henry Armstrong 6) Manny Pacquiao 7) Yuriorkis Gamboa 8) Sandy Saddler 9) Salvador Sanchez 10) Erik Morales
Hearns and Cuevas are pretty much even on a power basis,..Hearns was just more effective in the delivery of his power on the hapless Mexican. Neither one compares on a true "single punch" basis with Julian Jackson.
To be honest, we orginally had Jackson at the number 1 position for middleweights. Might move him back there if that is the opinion of the majority. However, even when he was number 1 he was still coming up short against Gerald in our computer simulations, mainly because of Gerald`s iron chin and toughness.
What weight Oscar are we talking? Oscar at superfeather and lightweight could knock down walls. Not that his huge size and weight advantage helped...
Lightweight and Welterweight. We currently have him in the number 10 spot at lightweight. Would you move him above Valero and have him on par or ahead of Mosley?
Barbados joe definitely should be in at ww. Maybe mayorga also. Wlad should be top 5 at hw for me. Lhw get langford and choynski in there
