    Duran
    Jones
    Pep
    Pea

I know I probably overrate Jones, but I grew up during Jones' pomp. Everyone turns a blind eye to 60/70s kids rating Ali over Louis ;)

Pound for pound greatness does not limit Duran to his Lightweight career. Factor in his victory over one of the great WWs ever in Ray Leonard (not to mention his JMW and MW -which is virtually unheard of in boxing history) and he's over Whitaker and Jones.

Where the bleep is your context? Throwing statements like these out there is simply irresponsible. Pep was about 135-1 at his best. Angott beat him but it looks microscopic in the proper context. And Saddler...? Saddler was an all-time great FW who would have been hell for anyone including Sanchez. Pep beating him at all is serious considering the physical disadvantages. And it's bleeping miraculous considering the fact that Pep barely got away with his life after a plane crash that broke his bleeping back.

    1. Pep
    2. Duran
    3. Whitaker
    4. Jones

"When you grew up" is no excuse for using romanticism to trump objectivity and history. Jones doesn't belong in the same sentence as Pep and Duran. Take it from a 70s child.

Very true, Willie Pep was the best BOXER of all time, even the past prime footage shows if Im not right, Im not far wrong.

The guy was a FWT soaking wet & Saddler would be AT LEAST a SFWT these days.

Nobody is a lock, Duran is the best 135 lber Ive seen as is Pep at 126.

Sanchez was a great boxer, might have even got better if not for his death but he wasnt as good as Willie Pep... Pep would UD Sanchez IMO.

I would seldom put many fighters in the same sentence as Duran, but the post called for it. I think Jones was such a phenom however that, at his peak, is a ***** of a fight for any fighter south of cruiser of all time.

    1. I was replying to Duran's LW credentials, I rank Duran very highly, but Whitaker, B Leonard and Ortiz all have great cases to be up there with him

    2. I couldn't give 2 hoots about him being 135-1 because most of those 135 were journeymen. The Angott loss around his prime hurts him, Whitaker wouldn't have lost to a 147lb equivilent of an Angott at any stage of his career.

    3. If you break your back you become paralysed, now I didn't remember in the Pep-Sadler fight Willie wheeling round the ring in his wheelchair, I'll have to dig it out.

Willie may have injured himself, may have damaged his back and broke some bones but he would have physically recovered before getting in the ring. Lots of fighters fight with injuries its part of life

i thought Jones was the best pure boxer in my lifetime. no one could compete with him. that's why he went 15 years without a loss. i consider his dq to Griffin more a tko over griffin. you dont just call a tko a dq like that.

I have to go with pep then Roy Duran third and Pernell who could be tough to hit. I truly appreciated his masterpiece over Chavez. But I still have to think Julio didnt approach that fight in the right way.

I agree with that, don't think Jones should be mentioned with the other three. Skills-yes, All time standing-no.

I appreciate your wit...! Good retort.

I agree with the difficulty of Jones' style -any man with that level of speed and power is dangerous- however, let's not just assume that Jones would so willing to accept many real challenges at any of his fighting weights. He was a more of a cherry picker than a "bring it on" type of fighter despite his hype. That costs him in P4P greatness.
