I just read this answer today, but good answer. Fighters are taught not to be afraid of other fighters. I am a former golden glove boxer and as soon as the bell rings, I only see the opponent and at times the ref. Well, only if you were going to fight a young prime Tyson. Floyd is just holding out for the bigger PPV that a Cotto vs Floyd can generate. Believe me, at the end whether Cotto wins or not, he will be happy with the pay day. Both will.
Wilfredo Gomez Carlos Ortiz Wilfred Benitez Camacho Tito Vasquez Ruiz Calderon Collazo Quintana Manfredy
:deal Thats right, he's my #1 1. Carlos Ortiz 2. Felix Trinidad 3. Wilfred Benitez 4. Wilfredo Gomez 5. Macho Camacho (very underrated) 6. Jose Torres 7. Wilfredo Vazquez 8. Carlos De Leon 9. Sixto Escobar 10.Esteban DeJesus
Put Ortiz clearly at #1. I know how you love Gomez, he's one of the most skilled I've ever seen at his peak as well, but when faced with the best just 4 pounds above his best weight, he didn't shine like he did at 122, and his resume is nowhere near Ortiz's.
My ranking of the fighters listed... 4. Hector "Macho" Camacho 6. Miguel Cotto 2. Felix "Tito" Trinidad 7. Ivan Calderon 3. Wilfred Benitez 10. Kermit Citron 9. Carlos Quintana 11. Luis Collazo 12. Angel Manfredy 5. Wilfredo Vasquez 8. John Ruiz 1. Wilfredo Gomez
Wifredo Gomez Trinidad Benitez Cotto Camacho Manfredy Ruiz I can't comment on the rest, as I honestly haven't seen them fight enough to say. Cotto could move up easily if he continues to win over some name fighters. PBF?
Great post, and thanks for taking the time to write it. Would you consider Ivan Calderon one of PR's best, or does he fall just shy of it?
A couple of dudes left out.. [Ortiz, Rosario ect...] but from the list I'll give it a crack. IMO Wilfredo Gomez Wilfred Benitez Felix "Tito" Trinidad Hector "Macho" Camacho Wilfredo Vasquez Miguel Cotto Ivan Calderon Kermit Cintron Carlos Quintana Luis Collazo John Ruiz
Wilfredo Gomez Felix Trinidad Carlos Ortiz Wilfredo Benitez Ivan Calderon Hector Camacho Edwin Rosario Miguel Cotto in that order and if Cotto beats Margo in good fashion he will be there right behind Calderon
no camacho was born on the island, and raised in new york. in contrast benitez was born in new york, and raised on the island any list of top p.r. fighters has to include ortiz, dejesus, escalera, and sammy serrano
Wilfredo Gomez Wilfred Benitez Felix "Tito" Trinidad Miguel Cotto Hector "Macho" Camacho Wilfredo Vasquez Ivan Calderon John Ruiz Carlos Quintana Luis Collazo Kermit Citron Angel Manfredy
Alltime best PR boxers ever IMO: 1.Carlos Ortiz 2.Felix Trinidad 3.Wilfredo Gomez 4.Wilfredo Benitez Those are without a doubt the top 4 and they are as close as can be, you wouldnt get an argument from me if you shuffled those 4 in any order. 5.Hector Camacho 6.Sixto Escobar 7.Esteban De Jesus 8.Wilfredo Vasquez 9.Miguel Cotto(if he clearly beats marga then he moves up) 10.Ivan Calderon(If he cleans out the 108 division then he moves up) There are more that could be in the top 10, Rosario, Escalera, Molina, Laporte to name a few.
