Yeah, 20lbs above his natural weight and 16 years after his career began he met a prime Thomas Hearns at his best weight and was knocked out.

Let's not forget that despite the size and age differences, Tommy was stopped in his prime by Leonard, Hagler in 3, and then later to Barkley, where as the much smaller and also older Duran beat prime Leonard, went 15 with Hagler, and beat Barkley for the middleweight title 17 years after he took the Lightweight crown.

How can they be head to head when most of them had their primes in different weight classes? They should be pound for pound.

if youre going to do h2h rankings, rank them all at their best. that means duran at 135, hagler at mw, hearns at ww or lmw, and srl at 147.

    Make the case.

They are definitely closer, and it's not like they're worlds apart of course, but Duran's career was clearly superior IMO.

SRL's H2H record over them is the best case that can be made IMO. Only one loss in his prime which he avenged the very next fight and made the guy who is supposed to be better quit in.

pound for pound is one of the biggest jokes in Boxing. There is no way to properly judge it is mostly fantasy.

Alright, if that is all you look at then the case can be made.

Duran however was considerably more dominant as lightweight champion then SRL was at any weight. He then stepped up 12lbs above his natural weight and clearly beat Leonard at his best. Excuses are only excuses, but anyone with eyes can see before the bell that the Duran of New Orleans was not the Duran of Montreal. The only other time Leonard fought in that style was partially in the Hagler fight, every other time he fought (Hearns, Benitez, Kalule, Ranzanny, etc) he fought like he did in the first fight. Both men were at their best and neither has an excuse, Leonard is the naturally bigger man and Duran won a clear decision.

Also, Duran had been fighting for at least 12 years by the time he met SRL, Hearns, and Hagler. Leonard, 14 years after his career began was getting dominated by Terry Norris just one division above his best (though this isn't much of a fare comparision based on Leonard's 5 year period of inactivity excluding one fight, but he had been active for 3 years up until the Norris fight.)

His career is the clear superior IMO, but I guess a case could be made for SRL, although I personally don't see it.

Pound for pound shouldn't have much to do with fantasy IMO. Call it ATG status if you'd like, given their skill and efficieny at their peak and in their prime weights, along with the accomplishments they racked up and the direction their career went. I think that is how to judge fighters.
