Jack Dempsey Wladmir Klitschko Sonny Liston Joe Louis George Foreman Mike Tyson Rocky Marciano These warriors were the premier punchers of their respective eras. How would you rank each fighter on power? Not overall punching ability, but power. Or, if you see this as too black and white, summarize your thoughts!
I really don't go by KO% but the way fighters move other fighters when they hit them and the sound of impact. 1) Wladimir Klitschko. Especially when he really sits on his shots. Watch the Mercer, Pulev, and Wach fights. Keep in mind those are men over 240lbs he's blasting all over the ring. 2) Tommy Morrison. A VERY, VERY close 2nd to Wlad. The impact of that left hook especially his 'A Hook' sounded like a small explosion. 3) George Foreman. You guys know the story there. 4) Lennox Lewis. Similar to Wladimir in terms of pure power but just a notch below. 5) Rocky Marciano. For a 185lb guy his power was incredible. The SusieQ on Walcott is still the single greatest punch of all time in my opinion. And it was LATE in that fight! 6) Mike Tyson. GREAT pop in his shots and the best display of this was his fight against Bruno. The first one. I know my list differs from the Thread Starters but those are who spring to mind first as far as pure power.
I agree that seeing how opponents bodies react to a punch is a great indicator. Especially when you combine it with the trajectory of the punch. When a punch looks to travel slow but causes a huge reaction when it lands, it's a sign of a heavy fisted thudding puncher.
Yep. George hit with a tremendous amount of force. Moved back men over 220lbs like they weighed 150. Wladimir and Morrison (A little more so with Wlad) moved guys but also had that snap. That cracking jolting power that you could hear throughout the arena. I'd say Wlad had Tommy beat in the force department but Tommy edged him just a tad with velocity and snap with that left hook. Both Force and velocity are equally important in ****ing up ones equilibrium imo. Lol!
Wilde Carbajal Arbachakov Perez I remember the ring had gonzalez ranked in their 100 greatest punchers of all time and I thought that was odd because when Carbajal hit people they were just gone. Like a mini Julian Jackson. Just some highlight reel knockouts. Wilde is an obvious number 1 abs Yuri had a lot of pop on a great right hand. Perez is an uncomfortable 4. I'm not sure he hit that much harder than guys like German Torres or even Ricardo Lopez.
How many of these ****ing inane threads do there need to be about heavyweights and their punching power. Punching power, while necessary , is but a small degree in the success equation in boxing. Having an excess of it does less good than having an excess of a dozen other factors like speed, reflexes, stamina, Ring IQ,...etc. I'llc pass on answering this silly thread and respond to the one just like it tomorrow.
I would say Dempsey then Louis had the most power in that they threw correct punches not needing very much distance...that takes great power with both hands... Then foreman marciano and Liston next.... The right bear..Dempsey..Louis..shavers
1. Earnie Shavers - the number 1 hardest puncher of all time . We all know that already . 2. George Foreman/Sonny Liston - Punching power is damn near equal . Blunt force power 3. Mike Tyson - Excellent power puncher and his hand speed played a huge factor as well 4. Wladmir Klitschko - A very hard puncher with respectable skill 5. Rocky Marciano - One of the most brutal right hands in HW history , Joe Louis and Rocky shared a lot of the same sparring partners and it was revealed the sparring partners admitted that Rocky was the superior puncher . 6. Joe Louis - Knockout power in both hands , can easily stop with either hand at any moment . 7. Jack Dempsey- Someone recently told Larry Holmes if he fought Jack Dempsey , just the wind of his punch can probably knock him out .
Lennox Lewis belongs somewhere in the top 10 as well. Tyson Shavers Lewis And Liston have proven in their careers that they can just turn your lights out with one shot out of nowhere. Especially tyson and shavers, although mike's power came from his handspeed and ability to hit people with shots they dont see. In terms of raw force it has to be foreman liston wlad and lewis. Dempsey, rocky and louis hit hard as well but were smaller
Hardest one punch - Foreman and Dempsey Worst puncher to face - Tyson and Dempsey (based upon first round knockouts)
