So I'm gonna try to do this for a ton of all-time greats. Starting with Monzon. Here's what I have so far: *Oh, and of course, no repeating opponents 1. 1977: Rodrigo Valdez II - W-UD-15 2. 1970: Nino Benvenuti I - W-TKO-12 3. 1971: Emile Griffith - W-TKO-14 4. 1974: Jose Napoles - W-RTD-6 5. 1972: Bennie Brisco - W-UD-15 6. 1972: Denny Moyer - W-TKO-5 7. 1975: Tony Licata - W-TKO-10 8. 1974: Tony Mundine - W-KO-7 9. 1972: Jean-Claude Bouttier I - W-TKO-13 10. 1972: Tom Bogs- W-TKO-5 Please, any input is greatly appreciated. ***UPDATE: Gratien Tonna out, Bogs in.
Some tidbits: I thought it would be too easy to go with the Hall of Famer Nino Benvenuti at No.1 so I went with Valdes. Valdes turned out to technically be Monzon's successor and probably would've been the best fighter in the MW division for 3 or 4 years had it not been for Monzon.
Where would you say Napoles was ranked p4p at the time Monzon broke him? For years I always said I would never hold it too much against Mayweather if he lost to Sergio Martinez at MW but would still give Martinez credit for taking apart the best fighter in the world. So I think right below Griffith (who was 10-0 at the weight) seems about right.
I just want to say that LittleNoSpaceRed's agreeability is a facade. It's well-disguised passive aggressiveness.
What are your (or anyone else's) thoughts on the regional talent Monzon battled through for the first 6 or 7 years of his career? Guys like Andres Selpa, Felipe Cambeiro, Jorge Jose Fernandez, Antonio Aguilar—all South American Champs. My (admittedly minimum) research on them suggests they were all pretty tough, big punchers.
I would replace Tonna at #10 with Tom Bogs. My reason is Bogs had an incredible run of talent that he was going through and was deserving of the shot. Tonna on the otherhand, had recently struck out against Valdez and tried to cop the title by laying on the canvas in the worst acting job on the planet. Not only that, he pulled the same acting job on Monzon trying to steal his title on a DQ. No way Tonna. Bogs was down about 5 times but at least he kept getting up in an honest challenge.
So Tonna's resume does look pretty paltry compared to Bogs'. Before fighting Monzon, Tonna only beat Kevin Finnegan and Bettini (2x). Bogs beat a lot of good talent in the late-60s: Juan Carlos Duran, Jose 'Monon' Gonzalez, Bettini (2x), Gomeo Brennan. He was dropped from the Top 10 after losing 3 of his 8 fights since winning the European title. But two of those losses came to quality guys like Bunny Sterling and Carlos Duran. I will be moving Bogs above Tonna. :good
Why was Tonna ranked so highly in 1975? Didn't The Ring automatically rank the Euro champ Top 5 back then?
