Wilde would be undersized at straw weight today! He coped with solid bantamweights such as Lynch and Moore. Check out the footage I uploaded of the second Symonds fight.
Jimmy wasn't there there to jab, run away from, or clinch. He worked for an opening, then attacked. A different form of pressure, maybe not like Marciano or Frazier, but pressure in the form of keeping his man guessing with footwork and feints as he inched forward before unloading his bombs.
There more on Wilde than what has been mentioned here. You can even see him box with his son. Though Wilde only stood 5'2" tall, I think he had long arms for a man his size.
Strange no one here agrees with you.:huh This is your post and it's totally WRONG. "The great boxers at fly could not deal with Jimmy's relentless pressure. He'd force you to fight or run and could keep up his pace for 15+ rounds"
He's definitely one of the all-time pound-for-pound elite. He really wasn't a proper flyweight. In fact, he'd be a SMALL man in the strawweight division if he was around today. He was probably 100 pounds stripped, and usually weighed in fully clothed. And he was knocking out full BANTAMS and even featherweights in some of his contests.
I rank him number 1 at FLW. A man with his speed, power and reflexes is a beast. I mean yes, maybe Canto outboxes him but would he survive the big hits that Wilde would land at some point? I doubt it. I rank him very high p4p. Don't remember exactly where but I think it's top 15.
I would say he's the greatest Welsh fighter without doubt.Greatest flyweight? Benny Lynch looks very special on film. The May1994 edition of the Ring ranked all the divisions top tens all time, they had it . 1.Wilde 2.Canto 3. Perez 4.Genaro 5.Lynch
I love reading about him, such a tough little guy. The stories of him beating people twice his size in the mines, are legendary.
