hey guys, similar to my last thread really (did find room for pintor and lora in the end btw). For the first time I've had a go at ranking Flyweight fighters. Now this might just be my lack of appreciation here but it seemed much easier due to a lack of what I'd call great Flyweights throughout history. I know there are guys like Borkhorsor and Chang who would beat most on this list but I left them out because they didn't stay around for long enough. Any constructive criticisms you have feel free to let me know :good Miguel Canto Pancho Villa Jimmy Wilde Pascual Perez Fidel La Barba Yuri Arbachakov Frankie Genaro Midget Wolgast Newsboy Brown Benny Lynch Pongsaklek Wonjongkam Sot Chitalada Betulio Gonzalez Pone Kingpetch Chartchai Chionoi
Bantamweights are my favorite division....Fly - is my weakest areas....Pleas share your thoughts as you develop them! I look forward to learning a little more from you and those that respond to this thread....perhaps it is time I start delving a little bit deeper here as well. I love Midget Wolgast and cant wait to see where you and others place him.
I used this in 2003 to make my first top 100 all-time list: 10 Fidel La Barba 9 Midget Wolgast 8 Little Dado 7 Myung Woo Yuh 6 Jung Koo Chang 5 Pascual Perez 4 Rinty Monaghan 3 Ricardo Lopez 2 Pancho Villa 1 Jimmy Wilde Mentions: Jackie Brown, Benny Lynch, Small Montana, Jackie Paterson, Pone Kingpetch, Fighting Harada, Miguel Canto, Santos Laciar, Hilario Zapata, Sot Chitalada, Humberto Gonzales, Michael Carbajal, Saman Sorjaturong and Yuri Arbachakov
For me Wolgast was undoubtedly great but I think Genaro was always the better fighter throughout their career. By that I mean I think he was the better title claimant. Ofcourse they did fight to a draw and perhaps a rematch would have been more conclusive but I think he sits just behind Genaro and just infront of Brown. That truly was a great Flyweight era when you consider the names around.
Stature according to boxing journalists and 'people'. 112lbs was never my forte, so I was influenced more than most divisons, by peer pressure. For instance Wilde gets the the number one spot in part for his catchweight work. But as I was compiling an all time top 100, that suited my needs. Now a days, reading up on him; Lynch might sneak a top 5 place; thanks to Fleaman, Harada might be top 10; Dado and La Barba giving way. I also think Chitalada might sneak a top 10 place. As the only reason I did not rate him in the first place, was because I was lucky to see him live (unlike any of his peers), and have spent nearly 30 years ranting and raving about him, on the strength of that (Magri) performance.
I'm more surprised by Rinty's inclusion than anything. The smaller guys I get if you're amalgamating but Rinty doesn't make my top 15 yet you have him number 4. I'm wondering if I'm missing something.
ESB classic did this in 2010 with the results being: 1. 357 Jimmy Wilde 2. 244 Miguel Canto 3. 151 Pasquel Perez 4. 125 Pancho Villa 5. 113 Benny Lynch 6. 97 Fidel LaBarba 7. 51 Frankie Genaro 8. 45 Pongsaklek Wonjongkam 9. 43 Midget Wolgast 10. 25 Newsboy Brown 11. 18 Fighting Harada 12. [tie] 15 Ricardo Lopez 12. [tie] 15 Yuri Arbachakov 12. [tie] 15 Sot Chitalada 15. [tie] 8 Jimmy Barry 15. [tie] 8 Peter Kane 17. 7 Santos Laciar 18. 6 Masao Ohba 19. 5 Pone Kingpetch 20. 4 Jacky Paterson 21. 3 Jung Koo Chang 22. [tie] 2 Hiroyuki Ebihara 22. [tie] 2 Daisuke Naito 24. 1 Memphis Pal Moore
I see I have Arbachakov much higher than they do. I'm sure Flea will crucify me for my insistence on "turning an average title holder into an ATG champion"
All the good names are in there luf...imo....as far as I remember right now. I would think Erbito Salavarria could be placed somewhere between the top 15..... or maybe I´m exaggerating, anyway just wanted to put his name in this thread
I´m sure Flea have something to say about a certain omission in there........some thai fighter you know... This content is protected Where is Accavallo btw ???
The Mullan's, Gutteridge's et al (basically many of those British names who have died in the last 15 years or so), gave Rinty tons of kudos. Bemoaning that he was overshadowed by the brilliance of Lynch, who was 'unique'; Allen and Kane (who I think, would now also be a mention on my list).
yeah but his whole drug scandal put me right off him and I'm not sure he has enough top level wins outside that. Accavalho just missed out, very close his dual wins over Ebihara are very impressive (he also only just missed out) It's basically after the top 15 the next level of guys just didn't seem worth ranking.
