Wladimir was an absolute monster hitter with both hands ... his problem was his chin and protecting it at all costs often minded his power as he focused on his jab, size and defense to win ... sheer power he was a monster ..

I think the key issue will be how the first few rounds go. Louis himself said Dempsey was like a sabertooth tiger from rounds 1-4 but the danger decreased the further the fight went on.

If Dempsey can hurt Louis early and get past that sizzling jab, he can potentially end the fight early. If not, it's an uphill battle. The biggest danger for Dempsey isn't Louis power or combinations, it's Louis' ability to adjust in the middle of the fight and execute a good game plan.

Muhammad Ali says it's Earnie Shavers:
    This content is protected

IMO it is more than valid for the 60s and 70s.
Earnie Shavers should therefore be compared to the strongest punches of the post-Muhammad Ali era, the answer is there.

I would have to read the endless fight recaps on box rec to see who out-speeded or got the better of Greb-which was rare.
But if it happened occ. given he had @ 300 fights in a few years it would be understandable.

However if Dempsey was as *extremely fast* as was claimed, & only a little over 20 lbs. more, then I do not think Greb would run c ircles around him.
Or "Fat Willie" would not have beaten him over even any short distance, at least if quite young-which he was.
Again I have said a couple times before Dempsey was fast-but not as blindingly quick as was billed.

Dempsey was doing that; but he was fairly exhausted early-& did not lash out until half way through the first round.
I am not saying Dempsey was in terrible shape-but think how much longer say Foreman lasted in Africa when doing the same, & he is known for limited endurance in his first career.

Dempsey did not have the endurance of a past prime Manilla Ali who threw more punches than any HW until then-in I believe hotter conditions.
Nor did he have Frazier's endurance, or many other fighters.

I am not doing the usual sad favoritism of slagging off one fighter as terrible or heroes as great.
I am merely saying that he was not the greatest in these areas.
