I'm pretty sure o read an article talking about him being the consensus number 1 fighter in the sport during his prime winning run. Very highly regarded during his day. Today not so much because people don't look enough into the era.
Haha why do you think I have so many posts, the thought of someone dredging up posts from my early days is cringe worthy!
yeah I think your right about that I get stick when i say he is not only Britain's greatest light-welterweight but also lightweight:yep
Hey; Ricky is borderline. I've got no qualms about that, more that no one was putting forth the other side. Read through this thread when it's done, read the words and watch the celluloid you are inspired to watch, and then make a top 10. I've loved jumping into unchartered territory; hopefully you can find some joy in Muangsurin KO1 Barro, Hamada-Arredondo-Shields fight and Fuji's slaying of Lopopolololo. I have.
Oh, yeah, lookat anything that interests you about the division, an odd one to investigate at times but ten stone is a solid weight for fighting men.
Much easier to digest then the bloody bantamweight division anyways! What a head**** of history that division has.
I think it's clear to see who the very best are in that division. A little murkier here due to stop-start nature, the early days, multiple titlists, people moving up/down etc etc Bantam has some of those problems but the main men stand out like a sore thumb.
to those in the know they do. But imagine your only knowledge was a two fight series between jofre and harada :-( trying to unravel the mysteries of the division from that starting point was horrific,
Turning into a nice little thread! If I can deviate a little from what the author originally had in mind, who does everyone believe was the best boxer to ever fight at the weight? Any picks for a very young Ray Robinson about the time he twice beat Fritzie Zivic? Me, I think Ike Williams (who has a very respectable light welterweight/welterweight record) might have proven a bit much for him. And Jose Napoles.
Best boxer is tough!!! I like Whitaker as one of the best boxers at the weight but there are plenty more.
I reckon he would frustrate Williams but lose to Napoles - just that little bit better with his feet and a more intelligent counter puncher. Williams would conservatively press Whitaker all night and rip him up close but it'd be a struggle racking up decent points against a fighter so slick. Napoles was a bit, I don't know, 'cuter' and could trade evenly whilst pressing.
