In terms of primeness, Charles/Walcott were a little past prime, Moore a little past prime, Louis significantly past prime. Rocky wasn't prime himself against Moore any more (pardon the pun)

I have allot of respect for Marciano taking on all comers, prime or not. And as for era quality, I'd rate it over Dempsey's, Johnson's, the late 50s and probably much if not all of Louis's reign

Though Louis was #1, he would not have been an ATG had he been at that level for his entire career, so the "ATG" portion of this statement is a bit irrelevant.

Yeah, they were all past their prime.
I guess that suggests that the young heavyweights around at the time weren't much good. (excepting Marciano, of course)

 

All you can do is fight the best at the time...and be judged on that...

 

Marciano destroyed one of his higher regarded peers in Layne. Henry, Baker, and Valdez were solid young talents as film shows. Harold Johnson was actually quite great and close to a Marciano fight. Problem was you had an aged phenom named Archie Moore at the height of his powers, suckering these guys into high risk/low reward fights on a regular basis and taking thier rankings to push himself into a Marciano fight. Had it not been for Moore, I'm sure Johnson, Baker, and Valdez would have at least got title shots.

 

number one might have been shane, but comeone these boxing boards are known for bs rankings, pac was and has been his no1 since about 07/08. so...
