Rare film of a Battle Royal

I proposed this a couple years back… just to give credit where it's due.

 

In its original incarnation? No.

It might be SLIGHTLY helpful in the development of martial arts in general, since there are presumably one or two approaches to fighting multiple opponents that MMA hasn't picked up yet. (Being a one-on-one fight and all).

Some sort of team MMA could work. Five or six guys a side. Reality show format with interviews with the teams, etc. You'd need several referees, early doctor stoppages when necessary, and a heavy emphasis on fighter safety. Not everybody vs. everybody.

Oh, and no creepy racism.

 

On the film itself: We mention battle royals in passing a lot in this forum. As historians, we should know what they actually looked like.

The problem that I have with this footage is that it's degrading, racist crap -- not that it's particularly brutal. Subtract the racism, and it wouldn't even be shocking.

Just stupid. Stupid and not very entertaining.

 

That is disgusting and sickening, very uncomfortable viewing. What I found particularly offensive is the (from what I could see) all white crowd just casually watching...how can anyone turn up and watch that as if it's a normal sporting event?

 

I think its hilarious. The little whacks the big guy from behind and then runs behind the other dudes.. Looks like a circus

It might have been. I bet some of those got bloody. Especially if you got a group of guys in there who happened to be members of opposing gangs, which I'm sure happened at one time or another..

 

Perspective ... realize men like Jack Johnson, Sam Langford, Joe Gans and many, many others had to endure this as part of their existence in addition to the color line ... as tough as many, many white boxers had it it is simply no comparison ..

 

If we want to get a complete unification of all the WBC titles, we're gonna need a bigger ring....

 

Nah, let 'em clown-car it with their super-heavy frames.

Arreola, Stiverne, Fury, Ruiz Jr., hell - Briggs. The more (and bigger) the merrier.

Guaranteed to be nonstop action, not to mention over with in a relatively short time with everybody gassing quickly from all the infighting, claustrophobia and mass of clumped body heat. No room for anyone to get cute or even load up on cheap shots, really.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, you've got to kill to stay alive. :ldevil
