That is fair enough.

However with fighters like Sullivan and Jeffries, we sometimes have to use lines of evidence, that we would not even touch with later fighters.

 

I look at it as more as hints of how they fought and not the real thing. I mean am I supposed to take the Sullivan Corbett sparing session and walk away with yep, that is how the great John L fought 100 percent?? No way he can lick Louis or Ali.

 

Good example.

For any fighter from Johnson onwards, it woudl be absurd to factor that into your argument.

However given that we have zero footage of Sullivan, and are greatly exercised regarding how cleverer was, we probably do have to bring that to the party.

 

Are you factoring the gloves he used during his time? Gloves of that time were essentially like MMA gloves, you could in fact catch and parry a punch in your hand much easier than in todays gloves.

 

Makes Harry Greb's training film look amazing.

Seriously sure he's 55 but he's stiff as a board. Head goes straight back, left down by his waist. You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Compare with the film of Corbett sparring with Tunney. Jimbo was way more fluid even as an older guy.

Some posters guffawing at an old Jeffries here still genuflect at Harry Greb’s alter even after his training footage looks like a Ray Gunn break dance routine crossed with some kind of seizure. And this was a prime Greb not a long retired fossil.

“But, but Greb’s resume cancels this out”. Surely JJ’s resume and accomplishments should too.
