Rare footage of Freddie Steele, Vince Dundee, Ken Overlin, & Randy Turpin

    Some more fights I've uploaded to my Youtube channel. Thanks to Raging B(_)LL for providing all of these.


    The first of these is Freddie Steele vs. Vince Dundee:

    This was one of Steele's biggest wins on the way up. Dundee, an ex-MW champ, was past his peak by this time, but no one expected him to get blown out the way he does here (he was never stopped otherwise in his long career).

    A good challenge is to see if you can count the number of times Dundee hits the canvas in this. He also finished the fight with a broken jaw and a concussion.

    The next fight is Ken Overlin against Fred Henneberry:

    Hennebbery was a rugged Australian MW contender of the '30s, and Overlin a very shifty and wily fighter with an awkward style of dancing, flurrying, and holding (he was often described in his day as a "poor man's Harry Greb").

    Henneberry won the decision here, but it was Overlin who went on to fight for and win the MW title a couple years later.

    The final bout is Randy Turpin's KO loss to Tiberio Mitri:

    This was for Turpin's European MW title, following his failed attempt to win the vacant world title against Bobo Olson. The result came as a shock to everyone - including Mitri himself, if you watch his reaction - as Mitri generally wasn't thought of as that big of a puncher coming into this fight. The fight signaled the start of Turpin's quick and sudden fall from the world class scene.

    Excellent stuff as ever chaps, thanking you. Steele looks impressive there, excellent overhand right although he does load up a bit too much on occasion with it. That fight, however, would have been stopped much earlier these days I expect. Dundee was brave as ****.

    I go all melancholy watching Turpin on the slide, considering what he was to eventually do to himself. Heck of a left hook though. Was Mitri ever in the frame to fight for the world title?

    He'd already had a title shot against LaMotta, in which he came in as a late sub (for Rocky Graziano, I believe) and LaMotta gave him a good working over.

    first time i've seen that.don't think i'll bother again.randy never fought at middle again i don't think and mitri was only considered a light puncher.

    Steele looks as impressive as his record did at this point, an incredible 99 wins with only 2 losses, which he later improved to 122-2 until losing to Fred Apostoli.

    Dundee probably spent more time on the canvas than he did upright during those three punishing rounds.

    The Turpin-Mitri KO I've seen before and it's difficult to explain. Turpin had looked competent only 6 months before against Bobo Olson, and very good against Cockell two years earlier. Mitri wasn't a puncher by any means but evidently he could hit if given the opportunity.

    I've also seen Henneberry fight before against a young Archie Moore and he was KO'd by a low blow there. This film does him better justice. Nice series of uppercuts near the end.

    Great stuff again!
    I have been impressed with Steele before now ,but I thought his finishing was very sloppy here, nearly everything he threw was long , he needed to give himself some room for those right hands.
    Dundee's punch resistance seemed to have gone ,but then Steele was a fast and heavy puncher who went for the ko from the start.

    Turpin's decline was rather dramatic after the Robinson stoppage ,he should have beat both Mitri and Olson imo.Randy had the right name he was a ***** hound .

    His finishing may have been a bit sloppy but to be fair the fight should have been stopped much earlier. After the 10th or so knockdown Steele may have asked himself what it would take to keep the man down.

    I think Turpin looked great against Don Cockell but it seemed to go downhill for him after that.
