He stayed in the amateurs too long. I watched this clip and a complete black and white version of the full fight at Steve Compton's house a few weeks ago. He has an impressive amount of Nick Wells footage and information. Wells had scary power for such a small guy. Steve said that Wells was offered a promotional deal with one of the big guys, Don King I think, when he got out of the Air Force but turned it down to go pro with a small time promoter out of Texas that he trusted more. He was mismanaged and already past his prime and those two obstacles were too much for him to overcome in the pros. Besides, he already had a family and a full time job so he couldnt fully dedicate himself to the sport.

He and Jesse Valdez are two of the biggest missed opportunities for the pros from that era. Valdez could do it all in the ring he was a great fighter.

AI is getting insane, isn’t it? Joking.

Amazing to see this in and of itself but it also provides for hope of more rare footage (previously written off) turning up at some later stage.

Fair warning, sometimes footage like this doesn’t last for shared viewing.

It makes mistakes. I asked Gemini if Ali ever fought a southpaw. I knew he fought two- Mildenberger and the great Richard Dunn. Gemini answered Joe Frazier who isn't one and Karl Mildenberger, and it omitted the great Richard Dunn.

Let's not get carried away. The Langford vs Jeanette footage probably holds that distinction. But this is still a great release of rare footage.

When it omits a legend like Richard Dunn it needs to be instantly trashed.

Who needs AS - artificial stupidity?

There’s enough organic stupidity going around as it is. :D

I asked it again. Now it says Mildenberger and Willi Beamanoff who isn't a souhpaw. No mention of the great Richard Dunn who is.

 It can’t even give uniform answers.

Next it will tell that James Corbett was an iron chinned, relentless, hard punching swarmer and that Dempsey was just a Fancy Dan who did his utmost to keep out of harms way.

I wonder if Richard Dunn is in a position to sue??? :D

I think my Greb-Tunney footage trumps that.

I assume most will but check out the other vids on that channel.

At least me, I hadn’t seen Foreman vs Forte or Shavers vs Clark 1 before.

Larry Holmes was a guy who figured he was good enough at boxing to stick with it. The biggest lie ever told was that he lacked heart in the amateurs. Holmes had professional boxing and driving a truck as his options at one point and the driving paid quite well for a guy with no education. But he didn't give up boxing and he noticed he was doing well in sparring with some names so he stuck with it for as long as it took.

It's interesting that Holmes' traditional weakness to the right hand thanks to his low left resulted in the southpaw right hook being extremely effective here.
