I feel at this point in his career he had lost a lot of his old fighting spirit. Tje spirit that allowed him to overpower Laporte, Lockridge, Castillo, Martinez etc. His big fights like Camacho and Haugen got to his head and he saw himself as something more than a boxer. To me he seemed disgused with Whitaker, a guy who dared not stand toe to toe. I believe this is why he quit his later fights- he thought of himself immortal to the fans (and was right in a way) and this allowed his concscience to do it when he would not have years later. Just my observations but I'm well versed in JCC, have his career set which is brilliant.

    Thanks for this, great interview.

Im 1 of the few that ranks Chavez & Whitaker side by side as the best fighters since Leonard & also 1 of the few that thinks a peak v peak LW fight would be a 50/50 fight.

Chavez was a brilliant fighter, an absolute machine in his prime... Mexico`s best ever & a top 10/15 fighter overall.

Who do you think could beat him at 135? I've always thought him vs Shane Mosley would be phenomenal fight- Sugar's speed vs Chavez's relentless pressure.

I think Shane would win the early rds but Chavez would drag him into a brawl thru the mid-late rds & Shane would oblige & Chavez more accurate punches & better defense earns him a clear pts win in a war of a fight, Mosely`s defense would be his downfall more than anything.

The only LW Ive seen that Id pick over the Chavez that beat Rosario is the Duran that beat Dejesus & it would be a close war... it would be a pts affair.

Ok interesting. I really can't see Chavez winning without a ko and Shane has always had a awesome chin. My only worry is how tough he found the fight against Manuel Gomez to be. He was a rough Mexican but could not be compared to a Chavez yet he kept rounds competitive (didn't win them mind) and based on that Chavez would be far to much. Still I don't think one performance of his is indicative of how he would do vs Chavez. Speed is to much for me- he hit a hell of a lot harder than Taylor and while a 135 Chavez was more dangerous he would struggle with the straight punches. I have no idea how he would deal with the pressure though at that weight.

:good Great interview, comes across as really likeable.

Chavez's slipping and left hook to the body is a thing of beauty, a come forward technical fighter.

If Mosely could stick to the plan of rapid flurries & on the move for the entire 12 then he may well get it on points but Chavez just seems to get closer & closer to you as the rds go by, he`s great at cutting off the ring & making you trade & Shane is wide open when exchanging punches, I think JCC would land plenty on Shane`s body AND face all the while slipping a lot of Shane`s shots... of course Mosely would land clean & he did hit a lot harder than Taylor but it wasnt Taylor`s power that troubled Chavez, it was his crazy punch output & even then chavez still slipped a lot of those shots.

I dont think Shane hits hard enough to even wobble never mind KO a prime healthy Chavez & Im sure vice versa is also true but over the course of a 12 rd war I think Shane takes the most damage, whether the judges can see this might be another thing.

Great fight either way.... I still go Chavez on pts.

very true...the battle of iron chinned fighters would break down to who can put the body shots better...and we all know the answer to that :good
