I've seen countless threads on Marciano, but can't remember one that singled out the attribute that made 'm especially dangerous. It was always the thing that grizzled trainers pointed to in the gym. Something jump-to-mind for you?
..at first i thought of several....hittng after the bell, hitting an opponent who was down, using elbows and head butts....but then it occured to me that these were often commented on...and maybe he didn't do them in the gym. so...i shall wait what to see what others have to say.
You're an ol'-school guy, a -- seen lots of the Rock. I suspect when it's mentioned, you'll nod your head.
Bullet proof?? His Iron body?? His Superhuman strenght? His power to fly around the world to turn back time, and save Lois Lane from certain death.
I know when Rocky first boxed in front of Goldman and Weill in a try out ,the guy they put in was a good prospect, was it Wade Chancy or some name like that?Apparently he went to work on Rocky ,and as Rocky covered up his face waiting for the storm to blow out Chancy unloaded on his mid riff, everyone remarked that the young Italian was unhurt and unfazed by the bombardment .Goldman is supposed to have stoppe dthe sparring and asked Rocky what he was doing,he replied"I was just waiting for this fellow to wear himself out ,then I was going to go to work".Goldman said rocky had two left feet but natural raw power.
His ability to squat and somehow punch out of that position. Marciano could do it when he was young but that bad back took that skill away and it was gone by the time of the Moore bout. But Marciano could squat almost to the canvas with his rear end near the floor and still punch. Who has the balance and leg strength to dip like that? The only guy I've seen in recent times do this was Whitaker, but he didn't do it very long either. And he couldn't punch out of that position & it was more of a defense only tactic while Rocky could and would fire off punches, which would make for extremely effective counters.
you're killing me with this question JG...but I love it (I think). Dundee would comment that Goldman raved about Marciano's power...But that's just too obvious! Work ethic?...that's been talked about too...rocky's attitude and determination made him a dangerous man. Problably not wanting to work in that shoe shop made him a damn dangerous man...Are we totally missing the point JG? Maybe being a cheapskate made him dangerous? Makes me feel dangerous sometimes. Addendum: Goldman from what I've read always worked with what he had in front of him...tall guys...make em' taller...short guys...make em' shorter...this in combination with Rocky's unpredictability(?) in throwing punches from different angles with full committment...just guessing now.
It's only gonna be someone like you, d, that's gone over every aspect of Rocky, that's gonna get it. It'll be a "Eureka!" moment.
Not tryin' to be a dick about it, d, but this reminds me of Rodan's answer of how he could've sculpted such a masterpiece as "The Thinker" "I just chopped away at the rock and that's what was left" Chop away at your post; it's there.
