Well the Margarito that fought Cotto i would rate at around a B+ or an A, but that pushing it. Its hard for anyone to beat a guys that has an extremely high workrate and is near imposible to hurt, and having punching power, Margarito ranks fairly high H2H IMO.
I don't wanna be too analytical about this guy right now, I just wanna love'em right now-for what he's done for this sport of ours. Pay homage all true-fight fans!
Margarito is an A- because what he has, he has in spades. His strengths are off the charts. His one glaring flaw at this point is lack of handspeed. He seems to have slowed down quite a bit in the last year for some reason. People can fuss about his lack of defense, but taking punches is literally part of his fighting style. He has to compensate for his slow handspeed by waiting for opponents to open up so he can score. Margarito's ring intelligence is also vastly underrated. The guy knows how to win, incrementally. He's shown it throughout his career. My favorite Margarito performance was against Antonio Diaz. As a sidenote I have a suspicion that Margarito is well past his prime at this point. I don't believe he'll stay effective for very much longer. The miles are catching up to him. It was nice to see him get a big win in case this is close to the end. I'll see what happens from here, but that's the way it's starting to look. He's slow as hell at this point. Amazingly slow of hand and foot.
Voted A-. Athough i would have mayweather A+ i think margo would win on points. Cotto is a big puncher and couldnt discourage margo. Cotto was also a lot busier than mayweather would be. Margo would win a decision on workrate having never actually caught mayweather clean. Im looking forward to a rematch with williams. I think its a toss up. I would pick mayweather in a match with cotto. Mayweather would have the power to hurt cotto.
B+ But he is an A+ pressure fighter, though his boxing skills aren't at the same level. He basically does one thing brilliantly and nothing else. Against Williams it was demonstrated that when he doesn't have any other way of fighting and against some opponents that one gear isn't always going to win. In the Cotto fight I was yelling at him to throw the straight right over the top more times than I could count as he was having great success with it but wasn't doing it enough. He was getting too close and smothering his own work with wide lopping shots. He could have had an easier time of things by keeping at range a little more.
