Thats cause there was enough idiots, to whom Tyson was just a name, to get excited about it. Jones was irrelevant in the boxing scene by the time calzaghe fought him. He'd lost 3 times to top opposition and had fought nobody to redeem himself since that. Nobody cared about it. Instead, coupled with the Hopkins fight, it gave the end of Joe's career the whiff of just picking off old, shot fighters. Nobody believed Jones was a threat. And they couldnt even sell the fight.
I voted very good. I think Jones despite his recent losses is still a very good boxer. I do think however that Jones lost the bout by letting Calzaghe hit him on the ropes more than Calzaghe won the bout.
I think you must have mis read, where have I said Jones admitted he was going to carry Trinidad???? I said, I think Jones said he was going to KO Trinidad to sell the fight. I thought Trinidad was shot at that time, and havent said anything different, so im not sure why your trying to indicate this either. Im glad you and everyone you know didnt waste your money on the fight. I still thought it was a good win as Jones was still rated in the Ring top 10 LHWs at the time, and considering that Calzaghe was past his prime also, though not as much as Jones. I havent said it was a great win, just that it was good rather than, insignificant, o.k., or the other 2 ratings, rating it higher than good.
A surprisingly high number of people picked Roy to win that fight. Though I only rate it an OK win, it's also a win Calzaghe needed because a large number of people were still ranking Jones highly enough to favor him over Joe. Quite similar to Tyson-Lewis in the regard that smart fans knew what the outcome would be, but a good number of people still needed to see it to believe it. And, as I've stated before, dominating a top 10 ranked fighter is never a bad thing. I'd loved to have gotten one more good fight from Joe against Pavlik or Dawson, but what's done is done.
I'm astonished about there being some predicting a Jones victory considering how horrible Jones looked against Tarver and Johnson-2 lesser fighters to Calzaghe-years before he fought JC.What was your prediction?
I voted insignificant, but only coz RJJ was nothing like he used to be. And for that fight to be in the top 5 Calzaghe wins, just shows the level Calzaghe was at.
Completely insignificant. It's embarrassing to see Calzaghe fans attempt to legitimize this fight. Calzaghe himself said that Jones was shot BEFORE the fight. Most people felt Jones was past it years before this fight happened. It was a money grab and it should have never taken place.
Worthless. Completely and utterly. Calzaghe beat a worse version of Jones than the one who was knocked cold by Glen Johnson and blitzed early by Antonio Tarver. And he beat him on points.
I know your a big Hopkins fan, curiously if Hopkins beats Jones, would you put it in Hopkins top 5 wins? (Im expecting you to say no, but...) As for Calzaghes top 5 wins, in no order id say Eubank, Kessler, Lacy, Hopkins and Reid (Reid was an odd fighter, who could blow hot and cold. But when hot seemed good)
