Hard to say if it’s the best win but it was a very good win for all the reasons already cited. Even though inactive, Dempsey showed excellent stamina and application of himself over the full 15 rounds. He still had that hungry cut to his physique. An outdoor fight obviously, it appeared to be a hot day also - but I have no info as to the temperature in Shelby Montana on that day. If only we had footage of several of Dempsey’s fights during his tear to the title. IIRC, the first Brennan fight reads as a very good performance also.
A very good win. Dempsey was a great fighter IMO who seems to have been influenced by Kearns to go the vaudeville route although he has to take part of that blame himself. I'll wait for part 2 of the Dempsey book to come in the mail to fill me in though.
Also, Jack Dougherty's best win. Dempsey's old roommate, who was also the ref, allowed Jack to foul all day long. Gibbons showed off the bruises to his crotch and thighs to reporters the next day.
It's all very well known. But it doesn't really change my opinion that Gibbons was the best fighter that Dempsey beat.
