Well that's where it gets juicy, because this runs deeper than Froch's ability to stop anyone.

I think one could interpret both Froch vs. Groves I & II either way. You could in both instances say he outlasted the younger man, rallied, and started brutalizing him near the end, breaking down a durable guy with power and persistence. There was, however, plenty to criticize in the way he went about it both times and neither was a picture-perfect textbook KO with Groves lain out cold, nor were they set up in the most expert and efficient manner.

Both times people complained the stoppage was early (but less so, and far less convincingly, in the rematch)

So I could see votes moving up or down on the basis of those. :think

Oh yeah, they were technically kind of the same day, weren't they? (not local time, but ours)

That was a looooooong night. :dead

...and belatedly, welcome to ESB! :partya

(quick search revealed we didn't interact until you'd been here for like seven months...and that was me telling you off about something, as I'm wont to do with newbies...)

I don't know, having that kind of punch in your back pocket doesn't hurt. Being able to finish with a big shot and time it so you catch your man with it - that is finishing ability, of a sort, I'd say. On the other hand, though, how much quality work did he put into getting the stoppage (probably less so than in the first match, even though it was a "cleaner" finish and removed more doubt) and yeah, how much do you credit him for what could've been a lucky bomb that Groves ate up rather than a deliberately placed fight-ender? :think Hard to know.

i'm thinking 8.5, and was taught to round to the nearest even number. he understands there's value in forcing the judge's hand.

Fair enough a Groves 2 type KO is technically finishing I just didn't realise you were including those types of finishes. Being able to do that definitely helps and Froch is sometimes able to do that against some opposition. Against the higher level guys with good defence/chin/stamina he usually isn't able to do that (Kessler, Pascal, Ward, AA, Johnson) but if you are at all suspect in those areas Froch can stop you (Bute, Taylor, Groves etc).

Froch seems very good at sensing when an opponent is hurt an/or tiring and is good at striking when he see's that opportunity. He usually has pretty good power, timing, combination punching and accuracy in those situations and he has a good enough chin that he can afford to open up and take chances in order to get the stoppage. Sometimes it backfires on him a bit and he gets caught on the counter though.

Overall I would say he is a good finisher, able to finish the more vulnerable guys but not some of the more difficult to stop guys. 8/10. I would have thought the same before the Groves fights.

    :good

I had and still have about the same (I think my original vote was a 9 but that was a round-up from 8.5) and my opinion is more or less unchanged as well.
