and he did beat Sam Peter, more convincingly than Wlad did. Tho he got robbed.

James Toney was a top 5 HW, later a top 10 HW, in a weak era.

HE had shades of looking a B+ HW but i think in reality he was a low B grade fighter maybe even a C and not a patch of his former self.

A good contender, recognized as a top 5 heavyweight from 2003-2007.

Has a great win over Ruiz that was ruled a no contest after testing positive for roids. Also stopped an old but still ranked Holyfiled. Later beat a good fringe prospect in Guinn.

Lost to top 2 Samuel Peter in a competitive fight most felt he won but to his discredit was nearly shut out in their rematch. Also, drew with top 10 regular Rahman in an ugly fight.

Some good high points but he couldn't break away from his peers like the more successful fighters of his era. Failed to capture any signficiant titles. I would rank him below Lewis, Wlad, Vitali, Ruiz, and Byrd...and put him on the same tier as Peter, Tua, Rahman, and Oleg.

He beat up John Ruiz 5 years ago and took his belt for about a day when Ruiz was 33 years old and not an old , inactive 38 like Haye did.....
hes good enough to hold his own and not embarrass himself, considering he came all the way up from 160. he proved he could beat "medium sized heavies" and not the really big guys

I'd have to say Toney did pretty well for himself at HW for a very brief moment in time, not a top guy but still competent and dangerous ... and then he completely fell apart. Doesn't that sum up his whole career? Slowly falling apart? Wheels slowly coming off the wagon?

All I can say for certain is that Toney was at least B+ category when he fought Holyfield but has slumped a long way since then.
I would have no problems comparing Toney to Rahman at HW, considering they also twice fought to a Draw I think that underscores the point.

Toney was not a very good heavyweight. The only heavyweight fights he won convincingly was against "grandpa Holyfield" and "Refuse to Win Guinn". Every other fight was that wasn't against a no-name bum was close (a few gifts for him there too) or he lost. He was busted for roids twice. His failure to ever fight a really tall heavyweight was sort of disappointing too, given the guys at the top are freakish giants.

Had Toney put the effort into training, he might have been able to do more,l but that's really the story of his whole career. IMO, James Toney is the biggest waste of natural talent in all of boxing. He could have been the best ever, or at least one of them.

:blood nah he had a close fight with Sam that could of gone either way then was outboxed and embarrased in the rematch.. Wlad won every round even with the the knockdowns thats should of never of been counted as such... Wlad outboxed him pretty handily, Toney was busted for roids twice since moving up to heavy hard to give him too much credit considering he was probably cheating the whole time at heavy.. Kinda like Margarito oince you get caught cheating as a pro it takes away from your wins. I think maybe top ten based on his name more then his resume. he really didnt accomplish anything at heavy.

James Toney would have been a formidable heavyweight contender if it wasn't for his achilles rupture. He's never been the same since.

After Toney beat Holyfield in one of his career best performances where he looked marvelous he was scheduled to fight Jameel "Big Time" McCline -- a subpar heavyweight -- but a BIGGG heavyweight to determine whether Toney could deal with the heavyweight giants. Word from everybody who was there during sparring including Freddie Roach, and Dougie Fischer was the has in even BETTER shape for the scheduled McCline fight and that he was BRUTALIZING sparring partners.

He got hurt, took some time off, and came back but was never quite the same again although he had some good performacnes against Booker and Guinn.

Toney's HW's injuries really deprived us of what could have been a few years of a very interesting HW contendor. I'm sure he would have snatched up and defended a belt or two if he had stayed healthy.
