1-10 scale IMO he was very hard hitting HW, the only man who knocked down Ali since 1963 (Chuck Wepner 'knockdown' shouldn't count). But how hard exactly did he hit? Your thoughts
If I had to rate it, something like a seven. He wasn't a nuclear puncher like Earnie Shaver's but he could punch as hard in the 15th as he could in the first, and had great placement with his shots as well. Very good at applying what power he did have.
I think that he gets sold a bit short in the power department. If you think it was a 7, then I would almost like to stand you on the business end of it!
I feel there were heavyweights of his own time who hit harder... The likes of Mac Foster, Jeff Merritt, Foreman, Mercado, Earnie Shavers would be among the 9's and 10's of the heavyweight division. Doesn't mean they could land their best shots as well, or throw as many of them as Frazier could.
Very well stated. One thing I like about Joe was that he could get concussive power on that hook without loading up and telegraphing it. His short inside hooks could separate a man from his senses. The precision was also there and it helped alot
Don't say Galento. And very few hit BETTER than Joe did. Frazier remains the most underrated heavy who ever lived.
Concur ^^^. Jerry Quarry took a lot of those type of punches from Joe in their 2 fights....and look how JQ ended up at the end of his life unfortunately.
I think he was going to say Galento. I wouldn't even consider Baer to hit harder, honestly. At least not on a consistent basis.
