9, great chin. Went down a lot, but only knocked cold once, by Rocky Marciano, in his last fight. His recovery was insane, like Alis. People only judging based on the knockdowns are oblivous to the hellacious punches he took throughout his career without hardly flinching. The way he took Baers best punches, and instantly returned fire is a great example of this.
Yes Joe didn't have a Chuvalo type chin. But apart from a ko loss to Marciano in his final fight he showed amazing recuperation powers and the heart of champion and refuse to be beat. Prime Joe stalked his opponents like a big game cat and feared no one.
This place is always good for humor on these anyomus polls, as Louis best fans would admit he's not a 9 or 10, yet some voted that way. I'd say about a 6 to 6.5. You only need power on Schmeling's level to hurt him, and lesser punchers could floor and stun Louis. You could say Louis was fortunate as Schmeling was the lone skilled puncher he fought. Sorry Max Bear had limited skills, he doesn't qualify. Chins are best tested when hit. Louis could not recover from Schemling's first hard right hand. What Louis did have was good heart though, so he'd fight on as long as his body allowed him to.
Which is why most of my polls are of the pubic variety. The funny part is these type of polls often draw out the low post count types. Hmm...
People discredit Louis chin for being knocked down by non ATGs. Ironically, the same people will rate Ali's chin as one of the best. One needs to have vision...
Huh? If Baer landed more than two jabs I ,just have missed it. Max looked awful, and did not land much. Do you have any punch stats? My guess is Baer landed very little. The TKO was botched as Baer was stopped at the time of 3:09 in the 4th round. In my opinion, this was the best Joe Louis filmed fight defensively and offensively, but lets not get too carried away as Bear's limited defensive skills and not wanting to be in the same ring had something to do with it. Yes-- Baer had to be pushed out of his dressing room.
Huh? If Baer landed more than two jabs I ,just have missed it. Half of the boxing I watch is older than I am. Showing Bear's best 9 seconds where he lands zero jabs and missed half the punches, only to bull Louis to the ropes doesn't tell me much. Baer was pretty poor in this fight. No jab, or defense.
Most would agree Vitali's isn't hitting power doesn't rate 9/10 , but that doesn't stop you from claiming otherwise.
