Stop spewing facts to support your argument.

His maths doesn't even add up. Plus 26, not 28, of his opponents have no previous fights on boxrec. But that doesn't include bareknuckle fights, and the records are incomplete anyway. For example Captain James Dalton is known to have had several bouts before facing Sullivan, they just aren't on boxrec.

Welcome to the forum. Just remember, facts mean little in here with some people.

Captain James Dalton is described as being "one of the best fighting men in America!"

That is quite a claim to make of somebody fighting their pro debut!

No it's not. It's Butterbean. Let's match up the opposition based on ring accomplishments of opposition as M of Q fighters ..

Do you think that people reached the conclusion that he was "one of the best fighting men in America", based on what you have found on Boxrec?

Isn't it getting obvious that the rabbit hole goes a bit deeper here?

I think that he was a super gifted athlete with a ton of charisma who captured the imagination of America in the early 1880's and was a terrible disappoint based on actual performance starting with his horrific national tour in 84 when he became a fat , disturbed drunk which was essentially a position he held for the remainder of his career .. he somehow managed to capture the imagination of the public, was exceptional copy and came back to have a memorial victory, bareknuckle, over Kilrain and then had a very brave showing against Corbett when he didn't even belong in a ring .. I've come to this conclusion by reading and reading Isenberg's "John L. Sullivan and His America", Pollack's Sullivan and Klein's Strong Boy many times over .. I happen to love John L. and feel he had a ton of natural talent .. I am simply inquiring about his actual career ..

Esch doesn’t belong in the same sentence with the fighters on your list. In fact, doesn’t even belong in the same paragraph with them. He couldn’t even carry their jock straps...as Larry Holmes convingly proved.

It should be pretty darn obvious based on this, that he was not fighting his debut against Sullivan!
    Then I shall oblige!

You will get a Sullivan opponent thread, every Monday, until we have done justice to the subject, or you lose interest.
