Some may not be as familiar with Margarito's career, others know him well. Margarito got the job done against Cotto, but just how good was his performance? He got hit alot, followed Cotto around the ring as opposed to cutting it off, spent alot of time waiting to throw/counter, exhibited poor handspeed and lack of combinations at times, showed limited mobility and agility, had a very low punch output in the early going by his own standards, and missed alot with his punches. How did you see it, and how would you grade Margarito's performance?
B for me because if he fought that exact way against a fighter with heavy hands like trinidad or Duran or Hearns he would've been stretched out on the canvas
Yes,he showed a great chin, great consistency, put pressure on Cotto always,he did exactly what he had to do
B+ He fought how he always fights, which is very effective. However, he could have been more effective by cutting off the ring more, throwing more punches from range, most notably the overhand right which was a good, but rarely used weapon. Therefore, it was not a perfect performance, but was very good nonetheless
as far as boxing goes i'd have given him a b-.ended up giving him a B based on his stalker approach.it really was kinda amateurish for the 1st 6 rounds though. gives me chills watching him jog after cotto later on.
It was a career best performance for Margarito. He had an opponent with the perfect style, Antonio's motivation was at a peak, and he came in relativly injury free. A+ , all the way.
It was pretty scary watching someone CHASE Cotto. Usually guys would rarely stand & trade, generally boxing off the back foot - even someone like Ricky Hatton would come forward but not as carefree as that. The sickest moment of the whole fight was Cotto landing a massive shot flush on the chin - Margo simply laughed and went back for more.
I think you are making a mistake with this statement. Boxers cannot fight in the exact same fashion for every fight against every opponent. If they did so they would lose. Well, maybe someone like Roy Jones from 1993-2003 could fight in the exact same way every fight because no-one was good enough to beat him, but in general almost every fighter, even great ones like Ali, adapt and modify their approach to suit the opponent. I think Antonio Margarito thought out his gameplan before this fight, executed it perfectly on the night, and had the satisfaction of knowing afterwards that everything went just as he knew it would. Margarito knew he couldn't simply outbox Cotto early, Cotto is too strong and simply too good for that. He knew he couldn't do what he did to Cintron and blast him out early. Instead, Margarito knew that if he simply kept applying a certain level of pressure, following Cotto, making him stay continually on the move, letting him tee off shots, letting him gradually wear himself out mentally and physically as the rounds pass, then Margarito would begin to impose himself upon the fight when the time was right, rather than expend energy trying to win the early rounds when he would probably fail - as Cotto is a quality boxer and would outbox him anyway in those early stages. Cotto is too good for Margarito just to come out the traps and dominate him by throwing lots of punches. Margarito knew that. He bided his time, let his plan take shape, and then ended the fight brilliantly. Truly a sublime performance. A+ :happy
For me, blocking punches with your face and managing to keep from falling over doesn't qualify as an especially good performance.
Right, following Cotto around the ring like that was ****ing brilliant. He spent weeks working on that technique. :rofl :rofl :rofl Funny ****.
