How do you rate Max Baer chin? This is from the last Baer thread. Is there any reason to doubt Baer's chin? Is it ATG? Please, explain your position.
Maybe an "A". He did get not only the Louis KO, but Lou Nova TKOed him twice, when he was under 30 & recently turned 32. So I cannot give him an A +.
In the 1st Nova fight Max was stopped with a badly cut mouth,in the 2nd, his last fight, he was floored twice and stopped on his feet,he was a good11 lbs over his best weight for that fight.
Thanks for the info! It still seems like an "A" chin, being stopped legitimately twice not just on cuts is not quite A +. Being a little heavier (& not facing a large HW & still pretty young) should not cause a tippy-top chin guy from being floored.
I think that's fair, though Nova fight was his last one and Baer didn't age well - he took a lot of punishment in his career. One of the Nova fights was stopped on a cut, as Tonto62 explained. Nova was a strong puncher though and Baer took a lot of clean punches from him in both fights. Who would you call an "A+" at HW by the way?
Any HW that was almost never down-or only when somewhat older, like Mercer-& faced many big punchers. Tua, Chuvalo, Cobb & a few others-but they also have to have absorbed a lot of punishment. Beaing a great defensive fighter &/or size & awkwardness making it hard for people to land effectively are virtues-but do not show punch resistance. So Vitali would be out-even if his chin possibly could be at this level he could not show it-& Valuev too. McCall likely had the ATG chin. Fought modern big guys until aged. no defensive wizard, never even down, including in 300 + rounds of sparring Tyson, & despite some drug abuse.
He was a very durable man. Not sure if I can tag an actual rating to his chin ( or anyone’s ) but he could definitely take it.
He has an excellent chin. No less than an "A", because Ali & Young put him down due to exhaustion, & only Lyle put him down, & repeatedly. Maybe the greatest chin ever as an older boxer, or up there with McCall from 38 onward, because he absorbed much punishment with his style & lack of speed.
I view Foreman's chin as comparable to Baer's to be honest, that's why I'm asking. Again - thanks for the response!
