Gatti had been through more hell in one round against Micky Ward than Floyd had in a career and he didn't have all that much left, I don't think. Not after what he'd been through and not if his next three fights were any indication. Nor was that his best weight. But the manner in which Floyd dominated him was impressive. It was a good win. Not great.
I think what people (Floyd Haters) really need to understand. Is that Gatti who has always been known to take a good beating while at the same time delivering one as well...Came into the Floyd fight winning 5 straight fights including 2 wars with Ward, beating an undefeated Gianluco Branco (same guy who fought Cotto), an undefeated Leonard Dorin, and KOing veteran Jesse James Leija. And against Mayweather...FLOYD WENT "UNTOUCHED" in their fight. A Virtual Shut-Out!!! And delivered a spectacular ASS-WHIPPING based on speed and precision.
It was what it was. One of Floyd's best performances. Gatti did have a title over that point although his matchmakers did a good job with that.
Gatti with his defence was not a hard opponent for any skilled fighter.Who was Micky Ward?He wasn't great
Good.... Gatti had been beaten up by Robinson, Manfredy, Ward, Hoya and probably some others before this.... And his style of fight doesn't usually last long, but Buddy matched him well and gave his career a second win.... Regardless he was coming off some good wins, and Floyd shut him down... Floyd came to fight and Gatti wasn't ready. I remember the first round Gatti turning his head to complain to the ref and Floyd just crackin him, it was really over there...
Gatti was never world class, he lost to every A grade fighter he ever fought, and usually heavily. He also lost to a few B grade fighters. He was an honest, exciting pro, but he was painfully limited and was coming to the end of his career when he fought Floyd. It was a good win; the performance itself was very good, but it's hard to give too much credit to beating on a corpse.
Gatti was on a winning streak at the time, however his skills were greatly diminished after the Ward trilogy.
Insignificant, Gatti was well past his best by then. His wars with Mickey Ward had taken their toll by then
Floyd himself said Gatti was a C-Level fighter, this is the same Arturo that got his ass beat Ward, the same Gatti that made Ivan Robinson look like Ray Leonard twice, the same Gatti that was stopped by Oscar, the Same Gatti that HBO refused to let Mosley fight,it was a decent win for Mayweather against another handpicked opponent nothing more than that.
