I really wouldn't have given Gatti much chance at all against Cotto, or any of the other champions at the time. It's a shame Floyd moved up so quickly afterwards, but then he was always chasing Oscar. There were some decent fights to be had at 140.
I would of given him better than a punchers chance. Floyd moved up because Cotto, was deemed to green by Arum and Mayweather. (Which he was) Hatton's camp/father stated they were not ready for Mayweather. Tsyzu - Fight could not be made. Impossible to make.
Nah not at all, Cotto brutalizes Gatti as well. Keep in mind that Corley stunned Floyd twice in their fight as well.
I know. But Corley had Cotto nearly out and done. Im merely saying I give him a better chance early on. Which I dont see its even questioned. Cotto has lacked defense his whole career. Gatti would walk through 2/3 to land 1. Which could of hurt Cotto.
It was a bit of a freak shot though, caught him right on the temple and made his legs go. He'd been caught like that against Abdulaev too i think, high up on the temple and it made him do a funny dance. It's not like he was troubled every time someone landed cleanly. I still don't really see Gatti having much of a chance, Cotto was just better in pretty much every department. I agree that the other fights were tough to make, just a shame that he couldn't have waited a bit longer until they could be made as he moved up to a welter division that was a mess, with Baldi (who is just terrible) just having upset Judah, but Judah somehow being allowed to keep one of the belts because Baldi couldn't pay the sanctioning fees. Then he went and retired just when the division was hot, which was a real shame.
It's just how I feel. More than a punchers chance. If I had to pick someone to win it'd be Cotto no doubt. Who would have fought and waited for at 140? The best 3 guys could not be fought. If the WBC didn't force Mayweather through 2 elimination fights for that WBC belt. He probably would of went to 147 even faster. The IBF didn't recognize Baldomir as a legit contender so they didn't even give him a chance to sanction it. Floyd stated he wanted some time off before Baldomir but was waiting on the DLH fight. Honestly, I blame the WBC, forced Floyd into at least one meaningless elimination fight.
Fair enough. I always wished Cotto didn't become drained at 140 cause when he wasn't he was so strong and powerful at that weight class. By the way did Showtime and HBO ever try to negotiate a fight between Floyd and Tszyu?
I don't think so. I mean the only time they came together was for Chavez-Taylor and Tyson-Lewis. And those two fights were HUGE compared to Mayweather-Zoo (at that time) I don't think they saw the money. But Im not 100% that they tried or did not try.
You sure about the bolded bit? I remember very clearly at the time it was reported that Baldi had failed to pay the $50k sanctioning fee and that was why the belt wasn't at stake.
Did you lose a bet? Or are you trying to start saying bull**** with a Floyd avatar so people think the Floyd fans are worse than the Pac fans?
It was a good win. Gatti hadn't lost in a while, and was a belt holder. He was also regarded as one of the best fighters in the division at the time. Mayweather absolutely took him apart.
It was a good win for Mayweather, who by some was considered the smaller fighter and I don't remember too well but was the underdog by some. Gatti was on a streak, but I'll admit I fell for the hype surrounding him at the time and as great of a warrior as he was, he was trying to outbox the boxer in Floyd and the style Buddy McGirt taught him served him well vs. other opposition, but it was the wrong strategy vs. Floyd. Nevertheless, Gatti simply outclassed and it was a good win, but not great win for Floyd. Floyd gets by Shane that will be a great win.
