Tyson had a great chin..he only got stopped after getting hit a gazillion times during certain fights !
Tyson got stopped because of a beating not a punch, people who take beatings will likely get stopped, Tyson was KO'd 1 time at his peak, another time in his physical prime after a 4 yr layoff, the last 3 came when he was an old shot fighter, fighting much bigger men, and he quit against 2 of em, the guy could take a punch you had to give a really good beating to get rid of him.
So most people rate his chin very good. Interesting for a guy who has 6 TKO-losses in his record and been down at least half a dozen times. Hell if Klitschko wouldve been TKO´d so much..... Tysons chin was not more than average. He managed to slip a lot of punches in his early career, so his opponent didt land flush on him. Later when they landed flush he was very often in trouble. Unbelievable how many people believe Tysons chin was something special....
pretty wrong when has tyson ever been floored by a one of punch, it took lewis hitting him with some serious bombs to drop him. He isn't an mccall or on that level but he certainly has a good chin
Tyson has a very good chin. KO'd once pre-prison and that was in a fight he wasn't mentally and physically prepared which is important to note because it takes both to be at your best to take punches. Focus has to be high because you have to be prepared to accept punches when landed. When you are not, like a sucker-punch, you can and most likely will be taken out. Physically: If you get tired, exhausted, you are more likely to be taken out no matter how good your chin is and not only from a physical stand-point...Mentally, your mind wants to give up and the body follows. Also, you can start breathing through your mouth and when that is open...it's not a good thing. And that's just shots to the chin. Take shots to the body when tired...****. Also part of the physical is the exterior damage: In the case with Douglas, Tyson's eye was swollen shut so he was taking shots he didn't see coming. I thought I heard him say he didn't even see that last uppercut coming...and then follow that up with a brutal combination...damn. Quick note: Douglas was known for a hard Jab. Knocked a guy down with it which Holyfield noted as to why he didn't overlook Douglas. Also, Oliver McCall says Douglas hit very hard. The problem with Douglas was commitment. He was committed for the fight with Tyson and he committed to his punches/power when unleashing them. Tyson could take the one big solid punch. He could he even take a barrage of punches...that is, until his stamina declined. But that only bothered him when he was not in shape to fight...mentally and physically. But considering how he showed up for Douglas, and how he stood up as long as he did...that says something. Pre-Prison: Great fight is the Ruddock fight. Those fights alone show that he had a World Class chin. Ruddock said he landed shots on Tyson that he felt all through his own body. In the end, it's better to avoid being punched. And taking a similar response of what D'Amato thought when asked... You want to know how good my fighter can take a punch, well, I don't...I want him to avoid being hit.
Douglas and Ruddock were both significantly bigger men. Those fights are actually a showcase of how solid it was, even in losing to Douglas.
He tore his ACL in the first round. You know, that injury which puts basketball and football players on the shelf for entire seasons?
