The D will definately be tested and especially in the first four rounds when floyd is ad******g. After that one of two things can happen. Pacquiao has taken enough out of mayweather to make it a competitive fight or Mayweather adjusts to pacquiaos style without taking too much punishment and proceeds to a UD victory. The first four rounds will be crucial.
Between good and excellent. He will never be a Whitaker-esque defensive wizard, his mentality places too much importance on attack to permit that, but Pac must be considered a very good defensive fighter now. How many other fighters as attack-minded as him never get knocked down, and hardly ever visibly hurt? Pac's footwork and movement make him very difficult to pin down, he only ever takes punches in isolation now, he never gets trapped and has to weather a storm, he is in perpetual motion, in a similar way to how prime Roy Jones avoided being hit (though not quite as refined as RJJ). Cotto only hit Pacquiao when Pacquiao wanted him to. Pac will always get clipped because he welcomes a firefight, but for someone with such an attacking style it is extraordinary he doesn't get hit and hurt more.
So i have to explain to you what an ATG offence is? Floyd blinking at hatton when he was surprised at how fast he could close him down is a good indication of him being troubled.
You dont have to explain it just not needed, we dont need to bring in ATG bull**** to judge pac's offence or defence. It can be done in this generation alone. Secondly hatton has always closed down opponents, he was always gonna back floyd up if floyd let him. this is just down to styles. Floyd easily proved he could fight hatton in the middle of the ring if he wanted to and various points in the fight.
Ok this generation alone, pacquiaos offence is better than any other opponent he faced thus far by far.
Without a doubt very good....but short of great. he's got so many natrual gifts and ability he's not an easy target for his opponents. I think b/c Cotto landed on PAC people feel PAC isn't good defensively but those shots....most of them that were finding their mark were b/c of PAC baiting Cotto....and testhing his bravado against the seemingly larger man.
Thnaks for posting.....very clear PAC is very solid defenisvely and the shots that Cotto landed were b/c PAC pretty much allowed for Cotto to open up offensivley. THe jab was working well for Cotto until he started eating the right hook.
Pac have pretty good defense when he choose to not trade with his opponent. Most people doesn't think Pac have good defense because of his warrior type habbits of standing and trading which he usually comes out on top anyway. Check his fight with ODLH, he is really quick when getting in, out and slipping punches. ODLH was a little slow compare to his prime but what makes him look even slower than he really is was because of Pac's quickness. Pac knew he couldn't trade with ODLH so he had to fight more defensively and couldn't plant his feet for full power shot which partly cause ODLH to misjudge Pac's power. In fights Pac believe he can overpower his opponents he tend to trade more believing he would come out on top. That is why he was putting up a strong guard in the first round against Cotto to test his power to assess if he can trade with him or not. You can't compare how much each fighter gets hit to judge their defensive ability. I think the most fair way is to see difference of how much punishment they recieve compare to how much damage they dealt to compare. Because usually to deal more damage they have to risk taking damage themselves unless you wish for them to focus more on defense and just trying to win by points like most defensive wizards.
Good and underrated, even though he does brawl, his speed and in-and-out style keeps him from taking tons of punishment. Watching him ducks and slips punches, while delivering he own devastating blows shows me he's no slouch.
This. He makes up for it though by having one of the best offensive attacks in boxing. His attack is nearly impossible to stop. A good defense is a great offense.
