I think, like most aspects of Hatton'sgame, his chin is vastly overrated. I like him as a bloke and seems a genuinely good egg, but i think hes a crude brawler with a poor chin.
Ricky only fought twice (of any note) at 147 and i wouldn't say Mayweather "shattered" Ricky Hatton's chin
Juan Lazcano nearly KO..TWICE! Luis Collazo almost KO. When was the last time Mayweather KO anyone in that fashion? When was the last time Pacquiao KO someone outcold with one punch? Below avg.
I just rewatched the mayweather fight. Damn hatton was literally running into lead right hands for the whole fight. I forgot how strong the guy was against mayweather. His chin is above average but not ATG like Hagler and those guys. Even in the pacquiao fight hatton shipped lots of punishment before he was knocked cold.
He took too many punches over his career and ruined his body outside the ring. I could honestly say that he had a solid chin his whole career, but he did a great job of ruining it by the end.
You can't say someone who hit the deck 3 times in 2 rounds "shipped lots of punishment before he was knocked cold". He wasn't absorbing punishment at all, he was hitting the deck whenever he got hurt, and it was all over too quickly to be considered a sustained beating.
Very decent early in his career, ruined by the sheer amount of punishment he took due to poor defense and his life-style outside of the ring. I think the Mayweather fight took his punch resistance away once and for all - that was a long, sustained beating and I don't remember seeing him take a punch well after that fight. Paulie didn't have the power to hurt anyone but Lazcano wobbled him and Pac hurt him badly every time he hit him. He started out with a good (not great by any means) chin but his punch resistance erroded away over time.
How many fights have you seen? 4? Froch ring any bells for starters? Oh. You probably don't know who he is.
In hindsight, the way he always fought from 18, he was a brutal KO waiting to happen, i don't think he had many fights in his career where he didn't take punishment. Take into consideration his style of fighting (you give me three of yours and i'll give you one big ****ing one of mine) type attitude. If his chin where average he wouldn't have got past the likes of Magee, Thaxton, Takie, they have put plenty of average chinned guys out on ***** street. Then on top of that he took Tszyu's, shots and a tough night with Collazo, an average chin wouldn't have lasted 4 rounds with those guys, even Urango for that matter.... Keep in mind Mayweather threw everything but the ****ing stool at him till he ko'd Hatton. He had a ****ing great beard, buts it's like everything else in life..wear and tear, good things don't last forever, he should have learned to defend himself better at the end of the day though.
