he coasted on cans like the cop frazier and that aussie kelly. two really joke fights at best. his resume will forever be labelled as an underachievment. never took chances. too bad for roy. When you get the **** smacked outta ya by someone like tarver.....
Never took chances? Going up to face a man with 35+ pounds advantage over you? And dont give me this Ruiz was a **** heavyweight bull****... We wasnt Ali but **** its a hell of a chance going up to heavyweight the way Roy did
well if you think about it decent victories over Toney, Hopkins and Ruiz at their best are much more than even De La Hoya "thank you judges" career has to offer. There was not no tension at his weigh divisions like in 80 at middleweight or in 70 at heavyweight but he did quite well.
RJJ best wins are Hopkins Toney Tarver Reggie Johnson (he gave James Toney hell and knocked out William Guthrie for the IBF LHW title putting him in a stretcher) Julio Gonzalez (who beat Dariusz Michalczewsk) John Ruiz Virgil Hill
Not really, he never fought the guy considered the best around for about 6-7 years (Dariusz), and then when he tried to fight the next best available after that (Tarver), he ended up losing 2 out of 3. Roy may have had the bigger achievements over the course of his whole career (namely Toney and Ruiz), but his reign as LHW was no better or more impressive than Calzaghe's at SMW, and of couse it ended in far more embarrassment.
Roy's biggest career achievements are Toney and Ruiz IMO. He beat a Hopkins that was still on the way up and improving, but Roy was probably still ahead of his prime too, so that makes it a noteworthy win too IMO. Aside from that, though, most of the rest of his competition is fairly indistinguished. He does have the reputation of beating a lot of "champions", but in most cases they were either considered past their primes (ie: Hill, Tito, McCallum, Reggie Johnson) or are considered among the weakest champions ever in their respective divisions (Ie: Lucas, Woods, Griffin, DelValle, Julio Gonzales). IMO, the fact that Tarver is considered one of the top 5 best fighters he's ever beaten speaks volumes about the rest of his competition.
