Who are the best non USA heavyweights ever? Here is my quick list but I'm willing to make changes based on good arguments. I based my list mainly on achievement with a bit of H-2-H and peak ability, but mainly on achievement. There could easily be omissions too. Comments very welcome. 1-Lewis 2-Klitscho V 3-Klitscho W 4-Langford 5-Schmeling 6-Fitz 7-Jackson P 8-Johansson 9-Povekin 10-Tua 11-Ibeabuchi 12-Chagaev 13-Carnera 14-Coetzee 15-Sharkey T 16-Burns 17-Ruddock 18-Farr 19-Berbick 20-Bonavena 21-Goddard 22-Maher 23-Bruno 24-Firpo 25-Risko Below is a list of contenders. I would say that you have Tua far too high. Carnera is too low. Farr is perhaps a bit too low. You are generally thinking along the right lines. My top 10 would be something like this: Lewis Klitschko W Langford Schmeling Klitschko V Fitzsimmons Carnera Johansen Jackson Burns This content is protected
Interesting, big shout for Carnera, not sure I see it. Tua I normally never rate that high, I'll go away, sulk and reconsider!
I think the very fact of Carnera having won the lineal title, means that you would have to have prety rock solid credentials, to rank above him without having held it.
01 - Lennox Lewis 02 - Wladimir Klitschko 03 - Sam Langford 04 - Peter Jackson 05 - Max Schmeling 06 - Vitali Klitschko 07 - Bob Fitzsimmons 08 - Ingemar Johansson 09 - Tommy Burns 10 - Tom Sharkey 11 - Oscar Bonavena 12 - Primo Carnera 13 - Trevor Berbick 14 - Luis Firpo 15 - Earnie Schaff 16 - David Tua 17 - Larry Gains 18 - Arturo Godoy 19 - Joe Bugner 20 - Joe Goddard 21 - George Chuvalo 22 - Tommy Farr 23 - Nino Valdes 24 - Peter Maher 25 - Corey Sanders
Hi Matt, looks familiar! One point, I think Schaaf was born in NJ? Is Firpo too high? Interesting, interesting List.
Greatest? 1) Lennox Lewis 2) Wladimir Klitschko 3) Max Schmeling (though you could rate him as high as #1) 4) Primo Carnera 5) Ingo Johansson 6) Bob Fitzsimmons 7) Sam Langford 8 ) Vitali Klitschko 9) Tommy Burns 10) Here's where it gets difficult. Maybe Jackson. Maybe Farr. Coetzee might have had an argument, if politics hadn't robbed him of a shot against Holmes. Too inconsistent, though...
Should have beaten Sharkey the second time, beat a variety of competent contenders, held the lineal championship, and destroyed the #1 or #2 heavyweight of all time by outboxing him. Louis was green, but he was close enough to his prime that it matters less.
To put it a different way: Some people rate Frazier over Wlad and/or Lennox. Schmeling's accomplishments are in the same league as Frazier's, and the rationale for his greatness is similar. If Frazier can be argued to rank above them, so can Schmeling.
I think it ie very hard to argue Lewis off the top spot, he had longevity, big name wins, a very deep resumee and great h-2-h ability. I'm actually more interested in who you think should fill the 5-25 spots.
Yeah, there is some changing of the guard-shows what we missed out on. And I can see more African and Asian stars coming to.m
