Finally caught the Bradley fight. What a brawl. That fight got me thinking about how good his chin really is on a scale of 1-10 with 5 being average, 6 being above average, 7 being good, 8 very good, 9 great, and 10 outstanding. Moreover, how would you rate the chins of the following fighters using the same scale based on their body of work so far?

    Tim Bradley
    Brandon Rios
    Austin Trout
    Adrien Broner
    Robert Guerrero
    Nonito Donaire
    Andre Ward
    Sergio Martinez
    Canelo Alvarez

Tim Bradley: 7. Provodnikov, a 140 pound fringe contender, had him out on his feet several times and probably could have got a TKO late or early were it not for Pat Russell's blown KD call (Bradley fell over after getting up, would have been a TKO if the KD had been called), and late, when he repeatedly protected Bradley. Bradley's got a decent chin but excellent recovery is what kept him in the fight (a little like Marquez, though Marquez has a slightly iffier chin and superhuman recovery.)

Brandon Rios: 8.5/9. Rios looks like he has a ******edly strong chin, but he hasn't had it tested by huge punchers like Matthysse or Garcia or Marquez yet. If he tanks the shots of some of those guys, he might get an improved ranking.

Austin Trout: 7/7.5. He took some clean hits from Cotto last time, but he should have, considering Cotto's smaller than him and shot. Otherwise, he hasn't been down or rocked/buzzed badly from what I can remember, but he hasn't faced a lot of big punchers either. We'll be able to see what his chin is truly made of in his next fight.

Adrien Broner: 8. Despite trying to copy Floyd, Broner's not superb defensively and gets hit plenty. He's taken the times he's been hit flush well, but he's also been a lot bigger and stronger than the guys he's fought up until now. It's hard to say how he'll react to big hits from men his size or bigger, but the evidence up until now suggests he has a solid chin. This rating can be reevaluated up or down in a few more fights.

Robert Guerrero: 8. Looks to have a pretty solid chin. He's been down before, but he ate some solid shots from Aydin and Berto. I'd say he's softer to the body than to the head, as evidenced when Aydin hurt him late with some body shots. He's definitely not defined or cut up at welterweight. His chin seems sound, though.

Nonito Donaire: 8. Looks good now, but he doesn't get caught flush a lot and hasn't fought tons of big punchers his own size or bigger. The fight with Rigo/potential later fights at 126 or higher will allow us to rate his chin more definitively.

Andre Ward: 7. Not the best, he's been down before and can be hurt, but it's not glass, and good luck landing a flush power punch on him that can seriously hurt him. He has good survival instincts, recovery ability, and defense. I think these will enable him to get through any rough patches he might have even when he does get hurt.

Sergio Martinez: 7. He has been down before, and almost got KO'd by Chavez Jr. last time out. He does have the heart to survive being hurt though. Decent chin, wouldn't call it iron though.

Canelo Alvarez: 7/7.5. The big question mark. He got rocked by Jose Cotto a while back, but he was younger then, and you have to imagine trying to make 147 when you're that big isn't easy on him. His chin has looked solid since, though, like Trout, he hasn't fought anyone other than arguably Cintron who could definitively test it. The Trout fight most likely won't answer any questions on his chin, but a fight with someone like Kirkland would.

You really think that Bradley has a great chin? I guess it depends on how you define a `great chin`. If you define it as being able to take heavy shots while you`re out on your feet I would agree that Bradley has a great chin. However, some individuals might define a `great chin` as being able to take/walk-through hard shots without showing signs of wooziness.

Great analysis Hawkfan. I think your ratings are pretty much in the range of how the majority here on ESB would rate them. I could be wrong though as I`m just assuming.

    Tim Bradley - 7.5
    Brandon Rios - 9.5
    Austin Trout - 8
    Adrien Broner - 8.5
    Robert Guerrero 9.5
    Nonito Donaire - 8.5
    Andre Ward - 7.5
    Sergio Martinez - 7.5
    Canelo Alvarez 8.0

I rate Broner's chin higher than expected, because of his style. Its an offensive style and he's not afraid to get punched in the head to get shots in. This means he trusts his own chin to hold up and i respect that. Rios' war vs Alvarado proved he's got a super solid chin for his size. Alvarado is quite the puncher and he was loading up on his shots...
