1 is the best, 5 the worst....

    Roberto Duran
    Floyd Mayweather
    Willie Pep
    Wilfred Benitez
    Pernell Whitaker

Extraordinarily hard to judge. Each has a claim.

    1. Mayweather
    2. Pep (only because statistically I feel Floyd took less shots)
    3. Benitez (unsure because Duran`s defense was better against Leonard)
    4. Duran
    5. Whitaker (would have been higher but sometimes got tagged with shots the others would not have) Whitakers defensive performance was better than all his other fights and I don`t know if Duran or Benitez would have evaded as many against JC specifically Duran because he would be in front of Chavez, I made my choice based on their average mistakes made in their top 10 fights.

There's different styles and strengths of a defense that make them great ..imo
    Pep for footwork
    Whitaker for upper body movement
    Mayweather for blocking ability

Locche deserves a mention for movement and slipping punches

Whitaker-most overrated fighter ever. And Duran kos Whitaker chinny in five. Body then head both against the ropes. Duran was fast against Leonard. As lightweight very fast and the great pinpoint puncher during two way exchanges I ever saw. Greatest fighter period I ever saw. He overpowers Chavez t9o.Chavez

So the consensus view in this thread is that Duran was defensively better than Pernell Whitaker?

Whitaker had the advantage of being a great southpaw.

If you consider Durans style his defence arguably takes more skill to pull off than Pea's. I'd still have Pea before Duran though.

If this were changed up to now a blend of Offense and Defense.

    1 Duran
    2 Pep
    3 Benitez
    4 Mayweather
    5 Whitaker

Doing this really puts it into perspective. Pep and Duran have it all.

If any fighter on this list is overrated,it's NOT Whitaker, not with wins over Mcgirt,Pineda,Nelson, close too or in their primes, and what should've been wins over Ramirez, Chavez. And, possibly over De loyhoya. And some very good wins over some good/very good fighters all ranked and close ,or in their primes between 1986/1994 . Their is a fighter on that list that, in my opinion is overrated. He's been fighting fighters tailor made for him for yrs.

Duran is the best of the lot because he slipped coming forward, not going back.
