Rate these 80's heavyweights in order.

Out of these men, Thomas was the only one to grace the pfp lists. He pulled off a 5-10 spot for a year or two.

Pinklon Thomas was the Ike Quartey of the 80's heavyweights. He had that ramrod straight jab. What he did, he did effectively, but I like Page's all around abilities (when on) a bit more.

 

The single decent win thomas had before winning a title was the win over tillis who he stpped. Page did a better job on tillis one fight later putting him down and Page had already beat guys like chaplain, monroe, ward, ledoux, alexander and would knock out the same Coetzee that Thomas was lucky to get a draw against. Yes Thomas beat Witherspoon but so did Page. He might not have fought Thomas but consider that Page beat both Bonecrusher AND Witherspoon and his MD loss to Tubbs wasnt so bad especially since it was Tubbs only decent win. Thomas was a good belt holder but I think Page's KO win over defending champion Coetzee was a better win than Thomas knockout over Weaver.

 

Outside of Tillis, Coetzee, and Alfonzo Ratliff, Pinklon didn't fight too many people.Page took on Chaplin in his ninth fight, pretty soon afterwards, was in the top ten.

 

exactly. Page paid his dues as a contender a lot more than most other beltholders. Tubbs's resume was about as threadbare as you can get when challenging for a title then once Tony got the belt he never again beat a good heavyweight.

The tape you have of Tokyo Tubbs is a re enactment done for Japanese TV. Several shots are performed by a stand in with a wig, as Tony was not available for the entire shoot.

The real fight is available from a good friend of mine who shot it from inside a shoebox. Theres a pillar in the way but you can plainly see the chicanery.

Page beat witherspoon and smith and knocked out Coetzee whom peak Thomas drew with. greg lost to Tubbs only by MD. Page's record only looks so bad when you consider most of his career was fought at top contender level.

 

Witherspoon-I thought he had a chance of beating Tyson with his size and chin in 1986 when he fought Bruno

Bonecrusher Smith-even though he lost to Marvis Frazier and to Tim, he beat Tim in the rematch and destoyed Weaver in a great short first round. He did hurt Tyson right at the end of the fight.

Greg Page-all around talent. Didn't have the power of Bonecrusher, and did lost to Tim.

Tony Tubbs-fast fighter and good boxer. Beat Page lost to Tim and beat Bonecrusher, but I still think Bonecrusher had the punching variable which made him all around less beatable.

Pinklon Thomas. Great jab and good power, but overrated and too focused on his singing career.
