Rate these defenses in order from best to worst

A very bad fight for Floyd yes, but is this how we will judge his whole career... Based off 1 fight alone???

What about the fights where he fought against good offensive fighters and showed superb defense?? Guys who were throwing twice as many punches yet still landing far less?

 

How do you think he does against Cotto?

Cotto is just a superior fighter IMO at 147, one who stylistically matches up quite well against Floyd. Floyd is at a natural disadvantage being the smaller man though.

 

Nice. Quite a few good posters around here that take Cotto. I favor Cotto by close UD; I don't think theres any way Cotto stops Mayweather seeing as how PBF is always safety first and Cotto would have no objections to getting the decision. Either way though I don't think Mayweather is going to be active enough to win this one and Cottos quick stiff jab dictates most of the fight

 

It's also a testament to the level of his opposition.

Imagine an actual ELITE opponent against Mayweather. Replace Castillo with Chavez, what would happen?

Well considering Mayweather can outbox God I think Chavez is screwed. Same goes for Pryor, Arguello, Duran,,,,,etc

 

Cotto's jab would be the main concern for Floyd I feel, but Cotto leaves himself open to much when throwing the big shots. I have studied the Gomez fight, but given the gulf in class I dont think it would tell us anything we dont already know, but look at the Mosley fight. When Cotto throws the left to the body it takes a long time to come back again and there is no shoulder to protect a counter right hand.

This is just one flaw I've picked up on but there are a few others as well. I feel that Floyd would do enough to KO Cotto in the mid to late rounds countering his careless shots.

I'm not taking anything away from Cotto and I'm not building Floyd up to be untouchable (I think De La Hoya circa 97-2000 beats him) but I just think Cotto would be too open for Mayweather at this stage. In twelve months though things could change as Cotto is still learning

 

Fair enough... I don't disagree about his competition. Although this thread is regarding defensive ability only, not overall ability. His flaw in the Castillo fight IMO wasn't getting hit to often, it was being too inactive, in both fights. Just my 2 cents!

Roy never had a "defence".

He had the speed to jump in and out of range before a guy could even get his shots off. Roy could never sit in the pocket and make someone miss. Look what he does when he's up against the ropes. He puts the ear muffs on with no head movement and just takes the shots.
