Mayorga's skill level for a boxer of his weight class was awful but he had enough awareness about what he was doing to know how to unsettle most opponents with his brawling style. It was more so awkwardness than skill, but it worked enough to give him paydays that he probably shouldn't have earned. Willard was not a skillful, textbook boxer by any means but he had a grasp on the fundamentals expected of a 6'6, 235 pound man which was to control the opponent with his left jab, keep them honest with the right hand, work the uppercut in close and use his greater height for defense. He took up boxing very late and basically relied on his size and exceptional stamina in order to win, but he had the skill required in order to last those first 20 rounds with a Jack Johnson. Carnera had above average skills for a man of his size, he was a dedicated individual who was well-schooled because of his high marketability. Due to his rather late start in boxing he could be made to appear uncoordinated at times by clever boxers but for the most part he was quite athletic for a 6'6, 260-270 pound super heavyweight, in comparison to most of them who were little more than big punching bags. One of his great weaknesses was that he never quite learned how to put his full bodyweight behind each punch and as a result his punching power and accuracy suffered.
Film of Carnera and Willard (Mayorga I assume most have already seen): [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPXB9OLrAnA[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpZdSNB93Mo[/ame] [DM]xlfmgh_primo-carnera-ko_sport[/DM] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7HZIecCpkw[/ame]
yeah i seen Mayorga ive never found him skilled he is exciting though and ive always wanted to know what others thought of his skill level also thanks for the vids imma check them out in a couple of mins
While not classically skilled Mayorga used his style effectively. I personally think the guy gets underrated because he was so wild and outlandish both in the ring and outside of it. He would have been better had he knuckled down and been more professional but he was pretty damn effective as it was.
Plus you gotta admit that Mayorga would have done a lot better if he hadn't had to go to a hostile foreign land to fight fighters with all the natural advantages and who's managers and promoters paid him to throw fights,,,, and then there's the loan sharks, drunken cowboys just in from their long drove where they had to fight with three Comanches,,,,,, and watch out for Baby face Nelson's...... alligators,,,, hippies,.... Don King,,,, Arum ???...... and being homesick,... a broken heart.... mafia...... fighters "dissin' him ",.... poor judges,..... distracted by hotties in bikinis...... Don King..... Don King..... a funny hairdo....... Arum,.......David Letterman,....... Don King......... Rampage Jackson.. Don King.......... Donald Duck........... and hundreds of Walter Brennan look-alike's..... did I mention Comanche or Don King ?????
Well you have to admit if hed had his brother in law, or the brother of his manager refereeing all of his fights hed have done a lot better. He also would have done better if his manager could have walked all around the ring shouting orders at the referee on how to officiate.
In your imagination........ I think you'd write good Sherlock Holmes novels,... nay great novels..... Maybe A Greb screenplay might be a better idea than a book,.... But your real talent may lie in novels about conspiracy theories and plots,...... you know, stuff like "we never actually landed on the moon, we just needed to distract attention from anti-Vietnam demonstrators.............................................& Tommy Uren would eat the best US WW's in 1918....And Freddie Dawson never complained about Australia ( you know ?? one of your better Lightweights)... and Eddie McGoorty was actually a very good fighter but Darcy knocked his head off both times, I know, a genetically inferior Aussie,... how about that,... and a lowly Irishman to boot.
