They have been many star in boxing like kessler, ortiz or judah.
Than there have been super stars like oscar, pacquiao or floyd.
Than there have been world stars, but in my oppinion only 2: ali & tyson.
They are the only boxers who are as big in the world (not europe or only usa)
as an michael jordan or an maradona. ali even might be the best known athlete worldwide ever, but tyson is known and cheered also wherever he goes.

rank by star status (past & present, comparing time without and with internet, tv, worldmedia etc.)

    ° joe louis
    ° sugar ray robinson
    ° sugar ray leonard
    ° oscar de la hoya
    ° mike tyson
    ° muhammad ali
    ° floyd mayweather
    ° manny pacquiao

    soI have it this way

    worldstars

    1. tyson (in my eyes mot known athlete in the world, movie about him, media coverage, his personal life, his boxing life, so many fans with tatoos if him, he surpassed ali in my eyes, maybe because he was just the most action packed boxer to has ever lased up a pair of gloves and looked like the baddest man in the world, yet had an sensitive side)

    2. ali (most have him 1, I can understand why, but tyson did become bigger)

    superstars

    3. oscar (ppv giant, ladys man, fought the biggest names chavez, whitacker, mayweather, pacquiao, hopkins, mosely, trinidad. not only famous for boxing, but for he siniging career to and he makes coverage until this day with suicide attempts and his promotion gb)
    4. pacquiao (super star in usa, very well known in mexico for his bouts vs mexican legens, a living god in the phillipines and also known in indonesia, malaysia and different asian country's, litle known in europe, but appart from england and maybe poland boxing is dead in europe)
    5. leonard (athletic, dynamic, fast, beat legends, became an legend, was an boxing and media star)
    6. robinson (in his time an mega star not only to boxing fans in the us, even up today people talk about him generaly about being the best ever, sugar ray robinson today with this kind of media, he would have been as known as michael jackson and michael jordan combined hehehe just kiddin)

memorable mention: louis, marciano, chavez & duran

    You may be right.

Contrary to what many Americans think, Oscar de la Hoya was not at all a household name across the pond. Neither is Mayweather or Pac.

I can only think of three:

    Ali, Marciano, and Tyson.

    Louis comes close.

The rest no. (but if any it will be the old-timers that come closest just because the western world had a simpler media structure and news were mostly local and the international news was less and more focused.

and by the way... Michael Jordan is HUGE in Northamerica, but not a household name is Europe. Mostly because Basketball is a tiny sport that few Europeans care about.

DLH in his prime was a well known name and he fought during a time when boxing received more attention, he fought in an era with other big names and his name was still one that stands out

to casuals and the public, people like manny and floyd are the only names they know

I doubt it. Philippines doesn't equal all of Asia. It's probably someone like Tendulkar. He does score higher than Mayweather though, just for being foreign and having fans in his homeland.

I think Oscar should rank higher than most people are putting him, its because of him that Mayweather and Pacquiao became famous, Pacquiao is not more celebrated than Oscar

good point, I forgot foreman, he is realy well known, also with his second career with his grills. but he is more on a frazier, lewis kind of stardom level, no ali or tyson level, but could be more famous worldwide than oscar because of the huge amount of grills sold.

is that in order, so you think money and pac mroe famous than oscar...mmhh doubt that, but with todays media and all that maybe you right.
