What's it like seeing the world through rose colored glasses? Do you really believe what you're saying or is it a fanboy self-protection kind of thing? My hero wouldn't do that, he's gone up five weight classes, but he took roids to heal from an injury. And after he got caught two more times, he needed them for his other bicep and ehh, to recover from a cut?
He actually used them to rid the sport of steriods in a 'use them and end up like me' kinda way. Sorry, I hate the Toney fat jokes. He was actually in great shape for Holyfield. In all seriousness that was the official story and I do remember him having trouble with his bicep against Booker.
They are commonly prescript to heal injuries and he injured his bicep in previous fight, so it isn’t that hard to believe. Is it truth? Who knows. I don’t really care either. Either way it wasn’t the steroids that gave Toney his masterful boxing skills, which made me a fan of his.
Toney looked strong, fast, seasoned, and brilliant as ever. The guy in shape is a monster for HW because his skill is as top as they come. Was a great performance against a faded Holyfield. Wish he had stayed at that shape, we may have sen some truly great fights at HW.
I'm a huge Toney fan, but it was a pretty insignificant win IMO. Holyfield looked terrible. I believe Toney won the first Peter fight, so for me that one is far more significant. Peter was prime and one of the very best hw's around at the time, and Toney outboxed and outfought him. A special achievement for a fat middle-aged mw. An all-time great monument to chin, toughness, and old-fashioned skill.
impressive just the way he dealt with him. nobody has been able to treat holy like that. was he old yes but he hadnt been beaten up or taken to an infight for years. most fighters just kept him at a distance and let him stay inactive. also holy really has a go at it. toney's performance was sensational. Also 30+ middlewieght 6 years removed from his p4p prime shouldnt of been able to do this to holyfield.
It wasn't great because Holyfield was 40 at the time, but I'd say very good, to come up from cruiser, having been a middleweight originally, and KO a guy who has a great chin and was still a good fighter despite his age and general wear and tear is impressive. He also dominated the fight up to the stoppage.
Here are some facts: Holyfield was some years past his prime, but he's also one of the most durable HWs we've seen so far, and he was ranked as a top5 HW by the Ring at the time. He should have beaten Valuev for the WBA strap, and that was 5 years AFTER he got stopped by Toney. Toney wasn't on roids until proven otherwise. I mean he was tested for roids for this fight, and tested negative - this isn't a 100% guarantee that he was indeed clean, but he most probably was clean. It wasn't Toneys first fight as a HW, he had a couple fights at HW before becoming CW champ and moving up to HW permanently. I voted it a great win because of the way Toney won this fight. He schooled Holyfield from round 2 on, and stopped him. No-one has done that after Toney - and the only man to stop Holyfield before Toney did was Riddick Bowe, with a lucky punch in a fight he (Bowe) was losing. Chris Byrd and Ibragimov both ran from Holyfield the whole night, these fights were stinkers - I guess if they really had FOUGHT Holyfield, they would have lost. Toney stood right in front of Holyfield, made him miss and countered - it was a masterful BOXING performance, not a RUNNING performance. As I said, Valuev should've lost to Holyfield.
he was really roided up against booker. he looked like mike tyson. he never looked like that before or since.
Like I said, he was probably on roids from the moment he stepped up to the heavyweight division. Take a look at some of those weigh in pics from the Holy fight and you'll see his upper body is more bulked up than it ever was in the lower weight classes. And also take a look at his body in the Booker fight he was was about as big and muscular as I'd ever seen Toney. He reportedly lost tons of weight in only about 3 weeks time leading up to that fight which one can assume was with the help of performance enhancers, and afterward that doctor who used to work for the Nevada Comission (can't remember their name right now) said that Toney's bicep tear in that fight was a common injury for roid abusers. I like James, but I'm afraid I can't defend him on this one. That dude was likely on steroids during his entire early campaign at heavyweight and was lucky he was only caught twice.
SO-SO WIN Holy was 10 years past his prime, but mr roid didn't do **** after that, but fight a no contest with huggy bear Ruiz, then got a major ass whuppin from Sam the fat man Peter... Toney hasn't accomplished a damn thing at heavy but run his garbage mouth..
