5 Got the job done, but wasn't highly impressive doing it. I was expecting a backlash following the Ibragimov debacle, but it never really came. Even the ending was disappointing. Still, he did win with plenty to spare.
Iggy was about as accurate as Charlie Zelenoff trying to hit a Heavybag, I honestly cant remember him landing anything solid on Wlad, do you?
It's evident that Wlad doesn't get the credit he deserves.. He has beaten virtually every importantly ranked heavyweight there is to beat ! If he continues winning for another 2 years or so, beating guys like Povetkin, Peter again, Valuev and possibly Haye, he then should be rated amongst the 5 best heavyweights of at least, the last 30 years. That could be in no particular order : -Larry Holmes -Evander Holyfield -Mike Tyson -Lennox Lewis -Wladimir Klitschkow
wlad is in a no-win situation. he can a beat tough hw conteder, win 8 out 10 rounds stop him with 1 punch and still get railed. People don't like his style and i can understand that. He is cautious and defensive....because he knows he doesn't hava a stellar chin. i really don't think it's worse than average. But people want a Tyson or Hoyfiled style, aggressive. Wlad will always be hated on due to this. Tony proved better than i thought especially his chin. he took tons of right hand proving he has a damn fine chin. not in the peter range but pretty close. his high guard defense was tough to break through but i knew wlad's power would break him down. He's like a hw winky wright in some respects. thompson is a top 6 hw. no doubt about it and would pick him to outpoint valuev and chagaev. Iggy-THompson is a coinflip. Id still favor Peter slightly by pts. now as for his performace. i give it a 7. he is a slow starter and he looked really out of sync early but after round 6, u could see the experience and corner really step up. Wlad adjusted by starting to lead with right hands. he proved he can take body shots and still not gas. when thompson was hurt, he closed the show. i would say wlad and uncle manny made a mistake by not altering their game plan right off by throwing more body shots. it was nice to see wlad throw some uppercuts. he did make adjustments and deserves credit for that. i do agree wlad was too quick to hold on but i think he was more confused and out-of-sync than anything. That stopped in second half of the fight.
I gave him a 7. He got the job done but was too hesitant at first. He could have and should have gotten rid of Thompson inside 5-6 rounds.
It's seems that his approach places a priority on winning, with looking impressive being a 2nd tier priority. Which, despite the fact that it does not provide the fireworks many boxing fans want, is what any intelligent boxer should do.
I agree, though the way you stated the question, I felt you implied Wlad took Iggy's best shots in that match and didnt go down, when infact Iggy landed nothing of anything hard on Wlads weak chin.
Holmes is overrated. He fought A LOT of low quality opponents, lost against better fighters and was featherfist. Just check his record. What is Holmes doing there in the Top 5?
