Interesting list. I was a bit surprise how highly Gevor was rated. I remember he was robbed against Sturm and he beat Asikainen but is he really a top 10? Sylvester and Joppy over Quillin? And Trinidad #7? Trinidad only win is Joppy... I was thinking Proksa and Kamarzin as well. Proksa beat Sylvester but his run was ruined short by Golovkin. I forgot Randy Griffin!
His Mosley wins were at 154 and he doesn't really get credit for beating a fading, shot, part time boxer in Trinidad at 160 who hasn't fought in 2 years and retired shortly after.
I have to make a new list.. You have a point with Quillin. Although he also got draw with Lee. But he is too high. Trinidad was an exciting fighter but I don´t rate win against Mayorga (at 160) at all. Mayorga is just a name at JMW and MW. I didn´t know Gevor beat Khomitsky. He was a tough sob, but I can´t rate him over Murray. I might be a bit bias, but Sylvester won Asikainen 2 by the help of hometown ref. Soliman is a border case IMO. He won couple good names but lost at least as many. Adamu has earned mention but unfortunately I can´t see him on the list. Btw. Gevor, Macklin and Murray; Sturm was good with judges. He also lost to Castillejo, Geale and Soliman.
Update. Gennady Golovkin (4/0) Bernard Hopkins (5/-1) Sergio Martinez (6/0) Arthur Abraham (4/0) Kelly Pavlik (2/-1) Jermain Taylor (3/-1) Martin Murray (0/-3) Ronald Wright (1/-2) Dmitry Pirog (2) Peter Quillin (1/-1) David Lemieux (0/-1) Daniel Geale (3/-2) Felix Trinidad (1/-2) Daniel Jacobs (1/-1) Andy Lee (0/-1) William Joppy (1/-3) Edison Miranda (1/-2) Keith Holmes (0/-1) Robert Allen (0/-1) Chavez Jr.(1/-1) Felix Sturm (5/-3) Paul Williams (1/-1) Khoren Gevor (1/-1) Darren Barker (1/-1) Amin Asikainen (1/-2) Javier Castillo (2/-2) Mathew Macklin (1/-2) Sebastian Sylvester (1/-2) Howard Eastman (0/-4) Anthony Mundine (1/1)
This has been very educative exercise and I recommend all fans do the same. Sometimes it´s good to look the big picture before making harsh judgement based on couple of name fighters. Nothing is really “clear cut” in boxing and those casuals who know only names like Trinidad or Hopkins are in danger to miss the big picture and achievements that these warriors have gained at the current era. All those names on the list have earned our respect - There are no bums, only athletes. I was surprised how high I ranked Trinidad and Eastman even though they really didn´t do that much at 160. Especially Eastman is anomaly – he is usually referred to one of the top 5 wins on Hopkins record (at 160), but he only lost against big names (4). I have always placed Sturm quite highly because he had the belt so many years, but looking his record exposes him quite heavily; his official wins (5) are highly suspicious and his record against opponents from (my) top 30 list could be (3/-5). Chavez Jr. is very difficult to rate because he had so many gifts decisions. Murray, Pirog and Lemieux are quite difficult to rate at the moment due to an extraordinary circumstances, but I admit overrating Murray a bit. I also underrated Geale quite heavily due to his last couple of performances. IMO Geale has done quite a lot during the last 10 years. It´s also quite surprising that Top 2 is not so obvious to me anymore. Martinez has more good wins actually than Hopkins or Golovkin. He just wasn´t as dominant as Golovkin or Hopkins. Hokins and Golovkin are very close but to me, Golovkin gets #1 - Hokins got beaten couple of times.
Carrara beat Castillejo, he also lost to him. He was ranked into top 10 for couple of years (for most sanction bodies). He fail the expectations though. A boaderline case, maybe top 40 (2000-2016)
You know what's funny is that Vargas wasn't even ranked as a MW yet he beat 3 in your top 30. Winky, castillejo, and Joval.:good
Yeah, but lets not make conclusions that Vargat could have beaten those fighters at 160. He might have, but it would have been a different ball game especially against Winky. Other example is DLH, he beat Trinidad and Sturm even if both were robberies on score cards Still DLH wasn´t very good MW.
Not officially but it was robbery of the decade in my books. The other "win" was also robbery but other way around.
